Peoria has no shortage of local restaurants to check out. However, if you, a friend or a family member are vegan or vegetarian, deciding on where to eat can become a bit more complicated.

Websites like HappyCow work to help simplify the search. According to website's about page, "HappyCow was founded in 1999 as a public service to assist travelers and people everywhere find plant-based / vegan options and healthy food."

So, here are 13 vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants in Peoria, according to HappyCow's list.

Fully vegan

1. Radish Kitchen

Radish Kitchen's "mission is to make plant-based and vegan eating more available and accessible to the region," according to its website. Initially called Up Beet Jams, owner Jam Rohr changed the name to Radish Kitchen when it opened its first in-person location.

Customers can find fresh, seasonal specials, such as the Fall-sagna and Autumn Salad. Other menu items include the crunchwrap, chili and cornbread and caprese salad.

2. Riley's Vegan Sweets and Eats

Riley's Vegan Sweets and Eats is a local bakery that is 100% vegan. It features doughnuts, cupcakes, brownies and a wide array of other baked goods, including cakes for special events. The bakery has also offered some of its baked goods at Radish Kitchen.

3. One World Cafe

Customers have access to a "vegan and gluten sensitive guide." The menu offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and desert.

For breakfast, customers can order menu items like the baked egg dish, substituting eggs for tofu and cheese for vegan cheese. For lunch and dinner, try the Eggplant Lasagna, Herbivorian Wrap and the Impossible burger.

Cyd's in the Park has opened its entire operation at Donovan Park in Peoria. A full restaurant-bar on the top story of the old Donovan Golf Course clubhouses joins Cyd's to-go market that opened on the first floor earlier this year.

Rhythm Kitchen Music Cafe features a vegetarian section on the menu. It clearly marks dishes which are vegan or can be made vegan upon request.

Vegetarian dishes include a Portobello-quinoa burger, a chickpea burger and a tabbouleh and hummus wrap. Vegan options include vegetables en crudite and the Brazilian chicken salad, which can use tofu to substitute the meat.
