CHARLEVOIX — The moment area track and field athletes have worked for all season finally came Thursday night in Charlevoix.

The Charlevoix track and field teams welcomed in a host of other programs for the annual Division 3 regional meet, where no area teams advanced out, though a whole lot of individuals will make the trip to the Division 3 state finals.

Clare earned wins on both sides of the event, while Tawas was second on the girls side and Harrison second for the boys.

Charlevoix did place third to lead for the boys, while East Jordan was fourth on the girls side, followed by Harbor Springs in fifth.

“Scoring 91 points against some real quality teams is quite an achievement,” Charlevoix coach Nick Barnum said. “We knew going in that Clare was the team to beat and that certainly held true. We are proud of how our kids competed and were assertive in all their events.”

For individuals, the top two finishers in each event advance to the state finals, along with others meeting a state finals qualifying time or mark.

In boys field events, the area will send both a shot put and discus thrower, with Charlevoix’s Richard Cunningham qualifying in the shot in second place (43’5”) and East Jordan’s Lee Nemecek placing second in the discus (125’).

East Jordan’s Preston Malpass blew away the competition and placed first in the high jump (6’), then Charlevoix’s Brady Jess was third in the pole vault (11’3”) and Landon Swanson took fourth at the same height. Both tied with the second place finisher, though tries at the height kept them from advancing.

Charlevoix girls coach Mike Bush was pleased with his team’s day and getting to send athletes through to the finals, while he also thanked the seniors and those who put on the meet.

“Placing seventh with such a small team was certainly a good performance,” said Bush. “Thanks to our seniors Leah Rohrer, Lauren Shepard, and Alex Baron who performed well in their last regional meet. All the athletes have a lot to be proud of about today. Thanks to Travis Garrett and his crew for doing a great job.”

The Division 3 track and field state finals will take place at Kent City High School on Saturday, June 4.
