Charlevoix earns first LMC win; Rams, Comets roll to league wins

KALKASKA — The end of the week closed strong for the Charlevoix girls’ basketball team, as the Rayders picked up their first Lake Michigan Conference victory Friday.

Visiting Kalkaska, Charlevoix pulled out a 34-17 victory to get back into the win column and earn their first league win of the season.

Charlevoix led in a 20-14 game after the opening quarter, though all the points weren't a sign of things to come for the night, as both teams went scoreless in the second quarter.

Charlevoix then outscored the Blazers 9-0 in the third to pull ahead 29-14 after three.

The Rayders gave up just there points after that 14-point first quarter by the Blazers.

Abbey Wright led Charlevoix with 11 points and four rebounds, Mikayla Sharrow had seven points, six steals and five rebounds and Bayani Collin scored eight and had four steals.

Charlevoix’s Ava Boss also had four points, three rebounds and three steals.

Charlevoix (2-2, 1-0) will next make the trip to East Jordan on Friday, Dec. 16.

Harbor Springs 50, East Jordan 29

EAST JORDAN — Injuries and sickness have hit the East Jordan girls’ basketball team hard this season and it continued when they met up with Harbor Springs at home Friday.

Harbor Springs put together a big second half to capture a 50-29 Lake Michigan Conference victory.

The Red Devils played with just five players after another went down and saw an 11-8 first quarter lead go away with a 10-0 run by the Rams in the second, making it 20-20 at the half.

“That really shocked us, I don’t think we recovered from that,” East Jordan coach Tim Smith said. “That really took the wind out of our sails. It’s on me.

“We’ve got to be stronger through contact. We didn’t handle their physicality well tonight.”

Olivia Flynn led Harbor Springs with 22 points, Sierra Kruzel scored 14 and Hailey Fisher added 12 points.

For East Jordan, Lindsey Cross scored 11 and Lillian Stone had seven points.

The East Jordan JV did earn a 30-13 win over Harbor Springs, led by Sydney Guerreros 13 points.

Harbor Springs (3-0, 1-0) will next welcome in Traverse City St. Francis on Friday, Dec. 16 for a key Lake Michigan Conference clash. East Jordan (2-2, 0-1) will next take on Pickford across the bridge on Monday, Dec. 12.

TC St. Francis 41, Boyne City 35

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City girls’ basketball team hung around throughout the night against visiting Traverse City St. Francis though couldn’t complete the job, falling in a 41-35 final.

The Ramblers took their first Lake Michigan Conference loss of the season in the game, which they trailed 8-6 after the first quarter.

St. Francis then led 20-11 at the break and 30-23 after three.

Braylyn Rincon scored eight points to lead Boyne City, Braydin Noble had seven and Morgan Deming added six. Gwyneth Bramer led the Glads with 26 points.

Boyne City (1-2, 0-1) will next bring in Lake Michigan foe Elk Rapids on Friday, Dec. 16.

NON-CONFERENCE 

Mackinaw City 63, Big Bay de Noc 21

COOKS — The Mackinaw City girls’ basketball team earned another win across the bridge with a 63-21 victory over Big Bay de Noc Friday.

Mackinaw City jumped out to a 22-6 lead after one, then led in a 42-10 game at the half, leaning on the fundamentals to get there.

“The girls played great defense forcing tough shots and dominated the boards tonight 42-15,” Mackinaw City coach Jake Huffman said. “I was pleased with the great effort our girls put into slowing down Big Bay's two All-UP players, holding them to a combined seven points.”

Marlie Postula led the Comets with 18 points, five rebounds and two assists, Madison Smith scored 14 and added 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks, Larissa Huffman had 11 points, eight rebonds, five assists and seven steals and Gracie Beauchamp added 10 points, three assists and two steals.

Jersey Beauchamp also had six points and four steals and Julia Sullivan had 12 rebounds.

Mackinaw City (3-0) will next bring in Ellsworth on Tuesday, Dec. 13 for a Northern Lakes meeting.

NORTHERN LAKES 

Harbor Light 43, Ellsworth 30 

ELLSWORTH — Northern Lakes Conference play began with a victory for the Harbor Light Christian girls’ basketball team in a 43-30 win over Ellsworth.

Missing a couple players on the night, others stepped up for the Swordsmen to help earn the win.

Harbor Light led in an 8-6 game after one, then 16-11 at the half and 36-20 after three, leaning on a 20-point third quarter.

Laney Jakeway led with 19 points, five steals and four assists, Jade Evoy scored 13 points, Anne Chamberlin had eight points and nine rebounds and Ambria Kruger had 17 rebounds.

Harbor Light (1-1, 1-0) will next welcome in Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Alanson 36, Wolverine 25 

ALANSON — Four games into their 2022-23 season, the Alanson girls’ basketball team is already more than halfway to topping their last two years’ win total.

Alanson picked up its second win of the season with a 36-25 win over Wolverine. The Wildcats had previously totaled just three wins over the last two years.

Christina Midyett led Alanson with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Gretchyn Bowman had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Alanson (2-2, 1-1) returns to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Vanderbilt, then heads to Maplewood Baptist on Thursday.

BOYS 

NON-CONFERENCE 

TC Christian 64, Boyne Falls 43 

BOYNE FALLS — The Boyne Falls boys’ basketball team showed some fight in a home matchup with Traverse City Christian Friday, though left with a 64-43 loss.

The Loggers fell behind 17-11 after the opening quarter, then 35-17 at the half, before eventually going toe-to-toe with the Sabres in the third.

Keaton Matelski led Boyne Falls with 18 points and Ashton Spang scored 14 points.

Reece Broderick led TC Christian with 23 points.

Boyne Falls (0-2) gets back to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at home against Burt Lake NMCA.
