Championship rematch set for Cathedral Prep, Meadville in District 10 Class 2A lacrosse

Cathedral Prep and Meadville were the favorites heading into their respective District 10 Class 2A boys lacrosse semifinals Thursday.

Neither had much issue advancing through to next Wednesday's championship game, which sets up a rematch of the last two championship games in 2021 and 2019. The Ramblers won last year after the Bulldogs took the title in 2019, a win that ended a five-year D-10 run by Prep. There was no title game in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Cathedral Prep (14-5) has won all three meetings with Meadville (9-6) this season in league play, although the last time out came at the slimmest of margins. The Ramblers took an 11-10 victory on their Senior Night at Hagerty Family Events Center.

"(Meadville) had a pretty good game play against us," said Prep first-year coach Andrew Smykowski. "They threw a couple things on the faceoff that worked for them. We've got to compete for four quarters. I'm optimistic about the next game (against Meadville)."

Bulldogs coach Rob Schwab talked about the small details that should enable his team to make a run at Prep the fourth time out.

"When we play them, it's always a tight contested game," he said. "It comes down to groundballs – penalties and groundballs. That makes the difference in those games."

Hindman sets CP season records for points and assists

Ramblers attackman Eric Hindman entered Thursday night's game at HFEC only four points off the Prep school record for points in a season. His two-goal, four-assist night helped Prep to a 23-3 win. He now has the school record for assists and points in a season (42 goals and 44 assists for 86 points).

Hindman said he gained his inspiration watching older brother Justin star for Prep. Younger brother Eric may have the edge in a sibling rivalry now.

"It was something that I always wanted to do after seeing my brother play here," he said. "I wanted to beat him in everything. Now, he can't beat me."

Ryan Voll was the Ramblers' leading point-getter during the semifinal at HFEC. He totaled three goals and five assists. Ryan Sorge added three goals and four assists. Santino Montefiori also had three goals.

Will McBrier, Gian Catrabone and Korey Webber had two goals apiece while single goals were recorded by

Chuck McBrier, Paul Sipple, Blake Taylor, Anthony Vandamia, Alex Hinz-Little and Nate Klan.

Prep scored the game's first five goals and led 16-1 at halftime.

"We were stick-checking and playing the ball well," said Prep goalie Josh Martin. "We've got to keep it rolling. We've been playing good 'D' for the past month or so. Communication is key here."

For Ramblers senior Josh Kanne, a trip to the 2022 D-10 championship game is a long time coming. The defender suffered an ACL injury early in 2021 and missed that title game. In 2020, there was no district championship.

"It means everything," he said. "I was out for over a year. Coming back, it feels great to be playing again."

Meadville rolls in nightcap

The Bulldogs opened its semifinal against Fairview on a 7-0 run Thursday and never looked back while winning the second half of Thursday's doubleheader 20-7 at HFEC.

Cody Schwab had seven goals and Brandon Cornell scored five. Michael Mahoney and Isaak Hornstein added three goals apiece.
