Central York School District teacher killed in Spring Garden murder-suicide over weekend

A Central York School district teacher was killed in a murder-suicide in Spring Garden Township over the weekend, according to York County Coroner Pamela Gay.

Erin Walker, 36, was reportedly shot to death on the 400 block of Hill Street Saturday evening after a verbal altercation with her neighbor, Daniel Berry, 59. Berry then took his own life, the coroner said in a news release.

Walker was found critically wounded outside her home around 6:10 p.m. and was brought to WellSpan York Hospital. She died there Sunday.

She leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, according to neighbor Jessica Lynn.

Lynn found Walker outside her residence by her truck.

"It's never going to be the same around here," Lynn said. "It's not something you want your kids to see."

According to Central York High School, Walker had been a social studies teacher at the school for 13 years.

"Miss Walker touched the lives of hundreds of students during her years of service in Central York School District. We feel fortunate for the time we have spent with her. She was a tremendous teacher and an outstanding person, and we are very saddened by her loss," District Supt. Peter Aiken wrote in a statement.

According to Lynn, who saw footage of the incident on a doorbell camera, Berry confronted Walker in the backyard where he started a verbal altercation that ended in the shooting.

Lynn was close with Walker, with playdates between their children and long text threads between them and another neighbor. She described Walker as a hardworking teacher who often gave generously of herself.

Lynn said Berry was new to the neighborhood, moving into his apartment in November and taking care of his mother.
