CBD meets baked goods: Lubbock's latest bakery offers variety, vegan-friendly options

A drive through Lubbock would show various businesses offering CBD and Delta 8. The newest bakery to Lubbock is taking the trend one step future by offering baked goods featuring CBD and hemp, along with dozens of options.

Samantha Beach, owner of Texas Sweet Box, has been a pastry chef since 2016 and previously owned a bakery in San Antonio. She also has a heart condition and began using CBD to help, with her doctor's approval.

These experiences, along with planning the new store while she had COVID-19 in 2021, led to her latest venture - Texas Sweet Box, a Lubbock bakery with freshly made CBD-incorporated goods, which opened at 2614 130th St. Suite 68 on July 25.

The products have CBD or hemp, though they can be made without. Items can also be made vegan-friendly, and gluten- or sugar-free. Beach also is in the process of getting Delta 8 for goods.

"We make everything in house, as I don't leave anything to chance," Beach said. "It can be extensive, but I want to have something for everyone. Customers often say we bake like grandmas."

Mentioning grandmothers, Beach uses her grandmother's candy recipe, which she can make in various flavors. Beach also brought back some of her San Antonio flair with 30 flavors of edible cookie dough, which was the former location's specialty.

"It's been pretty steady, business-wise," she said. "We have interest, but I think since cannabis and hemp have a bad rep from being prohibited for so long, everyone wants to see what will happen before they come in."

Beach hopes to combat that perception with educational events. She discussed the science behind cannabinoids, how they can help with pain and anxiety, and the difference between CBD, hemp and Delta 8.

"We're going to let the public come in and learn about CBD and how it reacts to our bodies," she said. "It's natural. Hops and hemp plants are in the same family. I love the science behind this, and baking."

Beach hopes to introduce savory breakfast items, an Italian soda bar, open more locations and has more ideas for later on. Texas Sweet Box is also working to have the sweets in local vape shops.

People can follow the bakery on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.
