Catching up with former area athletes: Nash Hutmacher getting playing time for Nebraska Cornhuskers

Sep. 22—LINCOLN, Neb. — University of Nebraska defensive lineman Nash Hutmacher, a Chamberlain High School graduate, has seen playing time early in the 2021 season.

Hutmacher, who played in one game during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, has made appearances in three games so far for the Huskers, playing against Illinois, Fordham and Buffalo. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound defensive tackle from Oacoma has yet to record a tackle or a defensive statistic in 2021.

The Huskers (2-2) play at Michigan State to resume Big Ten play on Saturday, Sept. 25, with kickoff at 6 p.m. from East Lansing, Michigan, before returning home to face Northwestern and Michigan on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9, respectively.

Burke graduate Bull leads Doane golf

CRETE, Neb. — Doane senior golfer Tressa Bull, a Burke native, has been the lead golfer for the Tigers early in the fall season.

In a dual with York (Neb.) on Aug. 27, Bull shot a round of 94, seven shots off the lead. She finished 36th in the Mount Marty Invitational on Sept. 2-3 at Fox Run Golf Course and Hillcrest Golf Course in Yankton, shooting 92 and 90 for a two-round score of 182. It was the top team score for the Tigers, who finished 10th out of 13 teams.

At the Lila Frommelt Classic on Sept. 17-18 at Two Rivers Golf Course in North Sioux City, Bull had the top team score once again, shooting 83-86 to finish in a tie for 21st place with a 169 score, leading Doane to a ninth-place team finish.

Bull enters the season off an 18th-place finish overall in the conference last season, with the second-best season scoring average in Doane women's golf history with an 87.14 strokes per round.

The opening two rounds of the Great Plains Athletic Conference championships will be held Oct. 4 and 5 at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion. The championship format is four rounds, with two played in the spring, as well.

Stimpson providing depth for Mount Marty women's golf

YANKTON — Pickstown native Caitlyn Stimpson, who graduated from Wagner High School, has emerged as a key member of the Mount Marty women's golf team early in the 2021-22 season.

In the one-day College of St. Mary's Invitational in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 21, Stimpson shot a score of 95, good for 12th place in the eight-team event, in which the Lancers took second place as a team.

Stimpson also had a two-day score of 174 during the Lila Frommelt Classic in North Sioux City on Sept. 17-18, taking home a 28th-place finish with rounds of 85 and 89. Stimpson also had rounds of 89 and 82 at the Siouxland Invite in Orange City, Iowa on Sept. 8-9, with the latter round posting a team score of 325, which now ranks in the top-5 in school history. Stimpson finished 12th individually.

The Lancers will prepare for the GPAC Championships in Vermillion on Oct. 4 and 5.
