May 7—Kankakee Community College is an apparent hotspot for talented Lewis Cass athletes.

Paxtyn Hicks is the latest to join the club, as she has signed to play softball at the JUCO located in Kankakee, Illinois.

Hicks joins classmates Madison and Taylor Rodabaugh and 2020 Cass grad Joey Humphrey as Kings to sign on at Kankakee.

"I went there last fall and I looked around the campus and I really liked it," Hicks said. "It was pretty small so the class-to-teacher ratio was pretty good. All the girls were super nice and welcoming, so I really like it a lot."

Hicks plans to pitch and play first base for the Cavaliers, who currently have a 30-10 record.

The Kings are having a good week. They swept Hamilton Heights in a pair of Hoosier Conference East Division games and played Class A No. 2 Caston to an 8-7 game. The Kings ended that contest with the tying run on third base in the top of the seventh.

It's been an up and down year for the Kings, who are 8-9 and 2-2 in the HC East, but that's probably to be expected for a team that returned just three varsity letterwinners.

"Coming into this year I wasn't sure what to expect because a lot of us haven't had much varsity experience and then of course missing last year, I didn't know what we were going to have and what other teams were going to have," Hicks said. "But I think overall we're doing pretty good as far as whole season goes."

Hicks, a 5-11 senior, was the setter for a Cass volleyball team that had their best season in years last fall. In basketball she averaged 8 ppg and 7.4 rpg and will graduate as the Lady Kings' third all-time leading rebounder.

But softball is her No. 1 sport.

"As well as three sports in school I also play travel softball all year around," she said.

Hicks plans to major in business management.
