Carrington overcome poor shooting in 57-17 win over South Border
Dec. 9—JAMESTOWN — In the final game of the first day of the Stutsman County Tournament, the Carrington Cardinals took on the South Border Mustangs on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The Cardinals started the game down 5-3 but went on a run to take an 11-5 lead heading into the second quarter. The Cardinals continued the run in the second quarter to take a 13-5 lead with 6:20 to go in the first half.
Despite going on a 17-2 run in the first half, the Cardinals (2-0) shot eight-for-42 from the field and one-for-15 from three. On the other side, the Mustangs (1-2) shot four-for-19 from the field and two-for-nine from three.
"We were a little cold from the floor but we had good effort and that's all we can ask is good effort," Cardinals head coach Andy Braaten said. "Sometimes the ball doesn't go in the hole so we really have to focus in on the other end and we did a good job of that."
Out of the half, the Cardinals' Haley Wolsky hit a jumper to push the lead out to 26-12 with 5:40 to go in the third quarter. The Cardinals outscored the Mustangs 20-5 in the third quarter, to head into the fourth quarter with a 44-14 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs' Emily Jochim drove in and hit the basket to cut the deficit to 44-17 with 6:17 to go in the game. That basket was the only points that the Mustangs scored in the final quarter.
In the loss, the Mustangs played 15 players with only four of them scoring.
"It was good to get the girls in," Mustangs head coach Jamie Bittner said. "They all deserve to play a little bit, so that was good."
The Mustangs are back in action at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, when they play Griggs-Midkota. The Cardinals return to the court at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 9, when they play Medina/Pingree-Buchanan.
