Hurricanes name Jordan Staal team captain
The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that Jordan Staal will be the team’s captain for the 2019-20 season.
This will be his second stint as captain of the club. He served as a co-captain along with Justin Faulk during the 2017-18 campaign.
Staal has been with the organization since 2012 and has recorded 97 goals and 262 points across seven seasons with the squad.
The Canes’ captaincy was made vacant earlier this offseason when Justin Williams stated that he was stepping away from hockey. He didn’t officially announce he was retiring, but it’s still unknown if or when the soon-to-be 38-year-old will return to the ice.
In addition to naming Staal the captain, Carolina also declared who their assistant captains will be. Jordan Martinook and Jaccob Slavin will each wear an ‘A’ this year.
The Hurricanes open up the 2019-20 season at home on Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens.
