Carlton County begins reassessment of Cloquet properties

May 14—Cloquet residents may notice an uptick in Carlton County staff visiting the city in upcoming months due to a Minnesota statute requiring reappraisals for taxpayer property every five years.

"All real property subject to taxation shall be listed and at least one-fifth of the parcels listed shall be appraised each year with reference to their value on January 2 preceding the assessment so that each parcel shall be reappraised at maximum intervals of five years," the statute reads in part.

Under the statute, county employees must physically inspect each property in the district and update county records accordingly. This process will be ongoing in the city for the remainder of 2021.

According to a press release from the county, all staff will have proper ID, a county vehicle, a tape measure, a camera and an iPad.

City taxpayers are not required to allow county staff members access to their home. If a taxpayer is not home at the time of a visit, the assessor may leave a business card or door hanger.
