Cards have big second inning in game one win

May 15—By the time this issue of the Kilgore News Herald hits the streets (or the laptops), Sabine has either wrapped up its first-round series in the UIL baseball playoffs, or it's going to game three.

The Cardinals, coached by Michael Mayfield, are facing Harmony in a best-of-three-game series in the UIL's Class 3A playoffs, all games to be played at Cumberland Academy in Tyler. And Sabine got off to a great start in that series Thursday night, with an 11-7 win.

Game two was to be played Friday night after the print deadline for this edition, and game three, if it's needed, will be today at 3:30 p.m., also at CA.

See the sports section on kilgorenewsherald.com to find out if there is a game three, and after the series is over, a wrap-up.

In that first game, the Cardinals built a lead early, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, going up 10-4. Harmony outscored Sabine the rest of the way, 3-1, but couldn't catch the Cardinals.

Sabine got three hits and 2 RBI from Payton McBride. Matt Huey and Alex Galyean also each had 2 RBI. Jace Burns and Caden Richardson each had two hits, and Holton Pepper and Richardson each had an RBI.

Huey got the win on the mound — he pitched 3 1/3 innings and McBride pitched 3 2/3.

A win for Sabine would be just the second time ever that the Cardinals' baseball program has advanced past the first round.

The Sabine-Harmony winner advances to face either Atlanta or White Oak in the second, or area, round next week.
