Captain Tom Moore's famous admirers have paid tribute following his death aged 100 after testing positive for COVID-19.

He rose to public attention in 2020 as he raised millions for NHS charities amid the coronavirus pandemic by walking 100 lengths of his garden, earning himself thousands of fans.

Captain Tom had been admitted to hospital on Sunday after being treated for pneumonia and testing positive for COVID-19, with his family later joining him on Monday. His daughters Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira announced his death on Tuesday afternoon.

Among those paying tribute to Captain Tom included Piers Morgan, who had interviewed the former British Army officer for his Life Stories series.

"RIP Captain Sir Tom Moore, 100. A magnificent man. A national hero.

"In our darkest hour since WW2, he rallied Britain with his resilience, courage and optimism. Let us all heed his mantra in our own lives: ‘Tomorrow will be a good day.’ Thank you, Tom," he shared to Twitter.

Singer Michael Ball who had collaborated with Captain Tom on a charity release of You'll Never Walk Alone described him as a "hero and a fighter".

"Rest in peace @captaintommoore," he said. "A wonderful life so well lived and a hero and fighter to the very end. So very very sad. Love and prayers for @Hannah_I_M and all the family."

Susanna Reid added to tributes as she tweeted: "The man who united and inspired our nation at a moment of deepest despair. Thank you Captain Sir Tom Moore for your service. I am heartbroken for your family. A life well lived, and well loved. RIP."

"You helped lift us all in an awful year. Thank you Captain Tom. A true Knight of the realm," Les Dennis shared while Peter Andre said: "A true hero. Rest in Peace Captain."

Meanwhile, Katherine Jenkins dubbed him an "angel amongst the angels".

"Tomorrow will be a good day because of how brightly you shone in all our lives," she wrote.

"Thank you for bringing us hope and strength. An angel amongst the angels. RIP Captain Sir Tom @captaintommoore."
