A Canton attorney plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, next year.

Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, 29, a Republican and former co-chair of the national Women for Trump advisory board, announced her run on Twitter last week for Ohio's 9th Congressional District.

Kaptur, 75, a Democrat, is the longest-serving woman in U.S. House history. She first took office on Jan. 3, 1983.

Gesiotto Gilbert became an attorney in 2017, and most recently worked as an attorney at Mills, Mills, Fiely & Lucas in Canton. She is a 2010 Jackson High School graduate, a Miss Ohio USA winner in 2014, and married to retired NFL player Marcus Gilbert. She campaigned for former President Donald Trump last year.

"Enough is enough. We need change! After 38 years, it’s time for Democrat Marcy Kaptur to go! I’m in and ready to run for Congress in #OH09!" Gesiotto Gilbert posted on Twitter.

She could not be reached for comment.

Gesiotto Gilbert joins at least two other Republicans seeking the position. The other GOP candidates are: U.S. Air Force veteran J.R. Majewski of Port Clinton and state Sen. Theresa Gavarone of Bowling Green.

Gesiotto Gilbert listed a Sandusky address on her Federal Elections Commission statement of candidacy form filed on Nov 23.

Kaptur is also being challenged by independent Youseff Milad Baddar of Toledo.

The new 9th district will cover eight counties in Northwest Ohio: Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky and Williams.

Kaptur responds to challengers

Kaptur is seeking her 21st term.

The Kaptur campaign told The Canton Repository: "Republicans from all over Ohio seem to be racing to compete in this gerrymandered district. Marcy Kaptur remains focused on bringing infrastructure dollars home, securing a clean energy future for Ohio, and creating the high-wage jobs Ohioans deserve."
