Camper resident found dead after early morning Knoxville fire

One person was found dead inside a camper that caught on fire Thursday morning, a Knoxville Fire department spokesperson said.

Knox County 911 received a call at 6:19 a.m. regarding a camper on fire at on Greenway Drive in the Poor Valley area north of Whittle Springs.

The engine company reported heavy fire coming from the camper with extension to an adjacent home, Asst. Chief Mark Wilbanks said in the release.

After firefighters made a quick attack on the fire and was able to extinguish the flames in the camper, they discovered a body near the door, Wilbanks said.

Investigators are working to determine a cause, he added. At this time and based on the preliminary investigation, foul play is not suspected. Eight other people also lived in the camper and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, he said.There was extensive damage to the camper, while the home sustained moderate damage, Wilbanks said.
