Who should be the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week? Voting is now open

Several high-scoring efforts on the hardwood are finalists for the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week.

The Caller-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Kingsville's Nate Garcia helped the Brahmas top the century mark in a win against Robstown, dropping 32 points.

King's Terrell Palmer combined for 55 points in two District 29-5A boys basketball games. Annapolis Christian Academy's Kayla Chavez finished with 45 points in two road games, filling the stat sheet in the process.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on Twitter @CallerSports.

THIS WEEK'S NOMINEES

  • Victoria Alvarado, Mathis girls basketball — Alvarado helped the Pirates sweep the week with wins against Goliad and Taft. Alvarado scored 16 points with seven rebounds and five steals against Taft and added 23 points and five steals against Goliad.

  • Kayla Chavez, Annapolis Christian Academy girls basketball — Chavez posted strong numbers in two road games last week, amassing 45 points, 14 rebounds, 14 steals, eight assists and four blocks for ACA.

  • Anthony Cruz, Ray boys soccer — Cruz netted a hat trick with three goals against rival Miller in a non-district match.

  • Nate Garcia, Kingsville boys basketball — Garcia poured in 32 points for the Brahmas in a win against Robstown.

  • Steven Gonzalez, George West boys basketball — Gonzalez finished with 27 points for the Longhorns in a win against Taft.

  • Triston Handson, Sinton boys basketball — Handson recorded a double-double for the Pirates against Beeville with 15 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and one steal.

  • JaNaisha Kelley, Carroll girls basketball — Kelley tallied 36 points last week for the Tigers, who are in the playoff hunt in District 29-5A.

  • Terrell Palmer, King boys basketball — Palmer scored 55 points in two games as the Mustangs split district games against Flour Bluff and Victoria West.
