Bulldogs report: Richards makes Rangers debut

May 9—Former Minnesota Duluth forward Justin Richards made his NHL debut Saturday for the New York Rangers, who won 5-4 over the Boston Bruins. Richards had an assist and two shots in 10 minutes, 11 seconds of ice time.

Richards, a member of the 2018 and 2019 NCAA champions, ranked second in 2019-20 with a career-high 14 goals and 25 points while going a plus-14.

Richards played in 120 games and totaled 66 points (26 goals and 40 assists) and a plus-40 plus-minus ratio in three seasons with the Bulldogs.

BASEBALL

Bemidji State 11, UMD 10

The Bulldogs' regular season concluded in wild fashion with an NSIC defeat in Bemidji, Minnesota.

UMD (17-23 overall, 14-20) overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit with six runs in the second only to give up the lead by allowing four more runs in the third. The Bulldogs tied the game at 9-9 in the eighth before allowing two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Shortstop Alex Wattermann went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run. Henry George, Sam Tanner and Trevor Gustafson had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs, while Gustafson and Anders Brown contributed two RBIs.

Bemidji State (8-32, 7-28) hit three home runs and were led by Parker Borg, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Isaiah Grancorvitz each homered and batted in three runs.

SOFTBALL

UMD sweeps Northern State

Taylor Koehnen homered in the 12th inning as the Bulldogs beat Northern State 2-1 in the first game of an NSIC doubleheader Saturday at Malosky Stadium.

Jessica Bren also homered in the sixth for UMD's other run. Sam Pederson went the distance, allowing seven hits and striking out four to improve to 10-5 this season.

The Bulldogs (29-13 overall, 19-9 NSIC) won 6-1 in the nightcap as Emma Frost totaled three RBIs and Lauren Dixon tossed a six-hitter.

UMD closes its home season Sunday with a doubleheader against Minnesota State-Moorhead.
