Pizza and chicken wings are a common combo: But though the big pizza chains like Domino's and Pizza Hut tend to offer wings, most of the big wing chains like Wingstop and Hooters don't offer pizza. Now, Buffalo Wild Wings is hoping to turn that notion on its head: For the first time in their 40-year history, the sports bar chain is adding pizza — and, of course, it's topped with spicy chicken.

The new Buffalo Wild Wings Boneless Bar Pizza arrives nationwide for a limited time, starting today, in two varieties — Buffalo and Honey BBQ — and both $9.99 options appear to put the focus on chicken and sauces over trying to take the pizza world by storm.

Visually, the rectangular pies are more akin to flatbread than their pizza shop competition. And as far as flavors, both varieties are — as the name implies — topped with chunks of boneless buffalo wings and one of the chain's signature sauces. The base is described as a "crispy thin-crust" — but these pies don't feature any tomato sauce: It's cheese and wing sauces all the way.

The Buffalo option offers two cheeses — mozzarella and bleu cheese crumbles — as well as ranch dressing, and is topped with pickled hot peppers, chopped green onion, and buffalo sauce-tossed boneless wing bits before being finished off with a buffalo sauce drizzle.

The Honey BBQ pizza on the other hand opts for a mozzarella and cheddar-jack cheese base topped with bacon crumbles, pickled hot peppers, chopped green onion, and honey BBQ-tossed boneless wing bits before getting hit with a medium and honey BBQ sauce drizzle.

Buffalo Wild Wings' chief marketing officer Rita Patel presented the new menu item as one more reason to make the chain your "ultimate football destination." "With wings tossed in any of our 26 sauces and seasoning, 30-plus beer taps, wall-to-wall TVs, and now Boneless Bar Pizza, why would fans choose to go anywhere else?" she said.

And yet, despite that confidence, for now, these Boneless Bar Pizzas aren't being added as a part of the permanent menu, insinuating that, indeed, pizza at a wing joint is still an experiment in progress.
