OLD WASHINGTON −Host Buckeye Trail continued to build some positive momentum towards the upcoming OHSAA tournament on Saturday with a 43-23 romp over Newcomerstown in Inter-Valley Conference hardwood action.

The victory was the fifth straight for the Lady Warriors, and head coach Miranda Redden likes the way her squad is playing with postseason action right around the corner.

"We have had consistent play from our seniors over the course of the whole year," Redden explained. "And now we are really starting to get the added production from our younger players. Really seeing all five of them clicking, which is key obviously going into the tournament which is coming up quickly."

"Always nice to be playing at a high level with the tournament drawing coming up tomorrow," Redden added. "We have four games next week before we start tournament play, so we just want to keep that momentum building this week. It's really just about executing at a high level down the stretch of the regular season."

During the current winning streak, the Trail seniors have been out in front leading the charge. And on this day, once again they showed the way with Josie Creighton putting in a game-high 12 point afternoon. Followed by fellow seniors Kaydence Starr with nine markers and Emma Smith with seven.

Creighton tallied six first half points, with Smith and junior Myah Frederick each adding five to jumpstart Buckeye Trail out to a 23-4 lead after the first half against the struggling Lady Trojans. Frederick closed the opening half, by drilling a last second triple from the corner off a feed from Starr.

"We've done a nice job the last few games with maintaining possession at the end of quarters, and at the half," Redden offered. "Just like today, when Myah hit that 3-pointer to end the first half. We were patience, and executed well and knocked down the shot. Doesn't get much better than that, we did a very nice job there."

To open the second half, Buckeye Trail put the game away with a lopsided 15-4 scoring edge in the third quarter to extend the lead out to 38-8 heading to the fourth quarter.

With the game well in hand, Redden substituted freely in the fourth period which allowed the Lady Trojans to finish with a 15-5 scoring advantage to make the final score a bit closer.

Frederick added eight points for Buckeye Trail who improves to 8-3 in IVC play and 12-6 overall, freshman Vayda Rome chipped in with four points and Josey Rome drilled a fourth quarter 3-pointer for the winners.

Cambridge 36, Caldwell 33

Cambridge High collected its second straight victory on Saturday afternoon, slipping past Caldwell by a 36-33 final score in overtime to celebrate Senior Day in fine fashion inside Gene Ford Gymnasium.

“Senior day was a big success,” said Cambridge head coach Tim Leppla. “The girls played with extra incentive to send our three seniors out with a victory.”

CHS seniors recognized included Jaynia Conrad, Kendall Kenworthy and Nevaeh Smith.

With the game deadlocked at 29-29 at the end of regulation, the Lady Bobcats recorded a 7-4 scoring edge in the extra session to take the victory to improve to 2-18 on the year. Sophomore Emma Krise and junior Kiara Murphy each scored a basket and seniors Conrad and Kenworthy hit enough free throws to give the Lady Bobcats the hard fought victory.

Cambridge rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up an 8-7 edge to send the game to overtime. Krise scored six and Conrad two in the quarter.

“Our game plan was to pressure their guards,” Leppla said. “We shuffled nine players in and out of the game to keep them fresh. Baily Kenworthy provided a solid defensive night. It was also nice to get Kiara Murphy back into the starting lineup. She has missed a few games in concussion protocol.”

Krise led the Bobcats with 19 points while Conrad scored eight, Kenworthy four and Smith three as the three seniors combined for 15 points.
