Broomfield residents continue to get vaccinated as coronavirus cases slowly climb

Mar. 3—Broomfield residents have been administered 21,171 doses of the coronavirus vaccine, a number more than five times greater than the 3,773 positive COVID-19 cases reported in the city and county to date.

Of the 3,773 cases, 75 were reported the week of Feb. 21. There have been 193 residents hospitalized and 74 deaths. To date, 71,010 coronavirus tests have been administered. The seven-day moving average of cases in Broomfield has slowly been increasing since the Feb. 15 low of 6.29. On Monday, the seven-day average was 12.14.

Data updated Tuesday evening shows 6,274 Broomfield residents have been immunized with one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 7,441 residents have been immunized with two doses.

Approximately, 84% of Broomfield's 70+ population has received at least one dose, higher than the statewide trend.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Tuesday the state reached its goal of vaccinating at least 70% of the 70+ population by the end of February.

"We did it Colorado. We hit our state's bold goal of vaccinating 70% of Coloradans age 70 and up by the end of February," Polis stated in a news release. "This is an important milestone for our state and has taken all of us, in every corner of our state, working together to get shots into the arms of some of our most vulnerable Coloradans."

State data updated Tuesday shows 1,428,609 cumulative doses of the vaccine have been administered across Colorado.

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine was approved Saturday by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine is one dose, and in clinical trials was found to be 85% effective in preventing severe disease and 100% effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths, according to the city and county of Broomfield's website. Unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine doesn't have to be stored in cold temperatures, making it easier to store and administer.

Polis announced Monday that the state placed its first order of the new vaccine, and the state expects to receive 45,500 doses this week, according to the news release from the governor's office.
