Brooks Koepka to make return on European Tour after knee injury
After taking nearly three months off, Brooks Koepka is finally ready to hit the course again.
Koepka, who has been battling a knee injury dating back to last season, is set to make his 2020 debut next week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the European Tour, his agent announced Monday via ESPN.
“Brooks’ rehab for his knee has gone great the past three months and he has met all of his physical therapy goals,” Koepka’s agent Blake Smith said in a statement. “He feels as good as he ever has and is excited to tee it up next week.”
Koepka underwent a stem cell treatment on his left knee to repair a partially torn patella tendon immediately following the Tour Championship in August in an effort to fix the injury that had plagued him all season.
He made his debut this season at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, though missed the cut, and followed that outing up at The CJ Cup in South Korea in October. He withdrew from the event following the second round, however, after he slipped on wet concrete at the course and landed on his knee — which re-aggravated the injury.
He has not played competitively since, and even had to miss the Presidents Cup last month in Australia.
Koepka is coming off yet another successful season on Tour, where he picked up three wins — at The CJ Cup, the PGA Championship and the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational — and had nine top-10 finishes. He carded runner-up finishes at both The Masters and the U.S. Open, took third at the Tour Championship and finished T4 at The Open Championship, too. Though he failed to win the FedExCup, falling to Rory McIlroy, Koepka did reclaim the No. 1 spot in the World Golf Rankings, and still holds it heading into Abu Dhabi.
Koepka has not yet announced a tournament for his PGA Tour debut this year. He is set to play in the European Tour’s Saudi International in Saudi Arabia later this month, too. Should both events go well, it’s likely that Koepka will jump back on Tour at the WGC-Mexico Championship in February.
