Brian Smith: Wilson, Fleetwood win District 3 baseball openers

May 24—Matt VanOstenbridge threw a four-hit shutout and Rafael Fernandez drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh as Wilson beat Dallastown in a District 3 Class 6A first-round game at Dallastown.

The 12th-seeded Bulldogs (11-10) advance to face fourth-seeded Manheim Township (18-4), which had a bye, in a quarterfinal game Thursday at Neffsville at 7 p.m.

VanOstenbridge, a sophomore left-hander, struck out eight and walked two against the fifth-seeded Wildcats (16-5). He threw 92 pitches.

In the Wilson seventh, Tommy Hunsicker led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Nick Crocona. Jordan Shutter followed with an infield single and stole second. Nick Fiorini walked to load the bases.

Fernandez followed with a line drive to left for a sacrifice fly that drove in Hunsicker.

"They were the better team," Wilson coach Sal Raccuglia said. "We played the better game."

Shutter had two of the Bulldogs' three hits.

Fleetwood 3, Octorara 1: At Atglen, Adam Knoll allowed one run in a six-hitter to lead the ninth-seeded Tigers (8-12) over the eight-seeded Braves (10-11) in a District 3 Class 4A first-round game.

Fleetwood, with its first district win since 2014, will travel to top-seeded West Perry (14-4), which had a bye, for a quarterfinal game Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Knoll, a senior, walked one and struck out one. Octorara scored its lone run in the seventh.

Jack Karnish went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run and Travis Loy was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Tigers. Aiden Soumas (1-for-4, double) and Zachary Dillbeck (1-for-4) also each knocked in runs.

Fleetwood scored single runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings.

Camp Hill 2, Kutztown 1 (9): At Camp Hill, the fourth-seeded Cougars (15-8) allowed a pair of unearned runs in falling to the top-seeded Lions (16-4) in nine innings in a District 3 Class 2A semifinal.

Kutztown scored an unearned run in the first inning as leadoff hitter Matt Remick came around to score.

Camp Hill tied it with a run in the third.

Cougars senior Grant Fitzgerald allowed one unearned run on six hits and three walks in eight innings. He struck out three. Remick walked two in his two-thirds of an inning.

Luke Parise and Christian Doi combined on a five-hitter for Camp Hill. Parise allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven in 6.2 innings. Doi gave up one hit, walked four and struck out two in 2.1 innings.

Kutztown committed four errors; Camp Hill made two.

The Lions will face second-seeded Delone Catholic in the championship game Thursday at a site and time to be announced. Delone beat Upper Dauphin 10-0 in five innings in the other semifinal.

Greenwood 4, High Point 0: At Geigertown, the top-seeded Eagles (13-4) saw their season end with a loss to the fourth-seeded Wildcats (10-11) in a District 3 Class 1A semifinal.

Greenwood will play Halifax in the championship game Thursday at a site and time to be announced. Halifax beat Mount Calvary Christian 9-8 in eight innings in the other semifinal.
