Brian Smith: Kutztown University's softball season ends with loss to Seton Hill

May 21—Kutztown University fell into a four-run hole in the first inning and was unable to complete a comeback in a season-ending, 9-5 loss to Seton Hill in Game 2 of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional Saturday at North Campus Field.

The top-seeded and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion Golden Bears (40-15) lost the best-of-three series 2-0 after falling 7-0 in Game 1 Thursday to the second-seeded Griffins (41-10).

Seton Hill advances to the Division II Championships in Denver.

Game 2 began Friday and was suspended until Saturday morning due to thunderstorms with Seton Hill, serving as the home team, leading 4-3 heading to the bottom of the third.

The Griffins had taken a 4-0 lead in the first on four hits, two errors and a passed ball. Only one of the runs was earned.

Kutztown cut it to 4-1 in the second on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Harvey. The Golden Bears scored two more in the third. Hannah Auvil had an RBI double and Jenna Lipowski an RBI single before the rain forced play to be halted.

After the game resumed Saturday, Seton Hill scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to go up 9-3.

KU rallied after the first two batters were retired in the seventh. After Kate Ostaszewski was hit by a pitch, Lipowski homered to left to make it 9-5.

Brianna Hughes and Alyssa Donato followed with singles before Kristin Geesey grounded out to end it.

Brianna Stocklin, Lipowski, Hughes and Donato each with 2-for-4.

Grace Paredes was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Seton Hill.
