Brian Kelly apologized to the Notre Dame football team late Monday night for not sharing the news of his departure from the program in person.

In a message obtained by The Athletics' Pete Sampson, Kelly wrote that he has more to share on the matter at the team's meeting Tuesday morning.

"I am flying back to South Bend tonight to be able to meet with you in the morning but the news broke late today and I am sorry you found out through social media or news reports," Kelly told the team about an hour after news broke that he was leaving for LSU.

OPINION: Brian Kelly's move from Notre Dame to LSU shows college football has a real problem on its hands

Kelly, 60, became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history this season, ending his time with the Fighting Irish with an 11-1 season, College Football Playoff contention and a total of 12 seasons with a run of 113-40.

Kelly replaces LSU coach Ed Orgeron, who agreed to part ways with the program at the end of the season back in October. The Tigers concluded their regular season Saturday 6-6, upsetting Texas A&M.
