Breaking down the Iowa high school boys basketball brackets for Class 2A and 1A districts

The postseason for Iowa high school boys basketball is still three weeks away, and plenty of jockeying for position and seeds will be done over that span.

But Class 1A and 2A teams got a look at their path to the state tournament on Friday when the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced the district assignments.

There are some potentially mouth-watering matchups on the horizon for area teams when district play begins on Feb. 11.

While the teams are focused on their next game, fans can get excited about what lies ahead.

Class 2A District 11

Louisa-Muscatine (1-12) is the only area team in this district. The Falcons certainly will have their work cut out for them.

The district also includes Camanche (12-2), Durant (4-11), Northeast Goose Lake (9-5), West Liberty (3-11) and Wilton (10-3).

Camanche is the clear-cut favorite to advance to the substate final to face the District 12 winner. Camanche is ranked eighth in the latest Associated Press poll and is 16th in the BCMoore.com rankings.

Wilton and Northeast Goose Lake likely will be Camanche's toughest foes. Wilton is 26th in the BC Moore rankings, while Northeast Goose Lake is 36th.

Class 2A District 12

The district includes area teams Central Lee (0-13), Mediapolis (11-2), Van Buren County (2-10) and West Burlington (9-6).

Mid-Prairie (14-0), ranked sixth by AP and 12th by BC Moore, is the favorite to advance to the substate final.

Cardinal (8-6), is ranked 41st by BC Moore and owns victories over Central Lee, Van Buren County and West Burlington.

West Burlington's record is deceiving. Four of the Falcons' losses have been by a total of nine points. The Falcons could just as easily be 13-2. The Falcons are 42nd in the BC Moore rankings.

Mediapolis (11-2) quietly has put together a solid season and has one of the top defenses around. The Bulldogs are finally healthy and are 76th in the BC Moore rankings.

Van Buren County features one of the top guards in the area in junior Jackson Manning, while Central Lee continues to improve as the season winds down.

Class 1A District 9

Danville (12-1) and Winfield-Mount Union (13-1) appear to be on a collision course here. The Bears are 26th in the BC Moore rankings, while the Wolves are 34th.

The district also includes Columbus (3-11), Highland (1-13), Hillcrest Academy (9-3), Holy Trinity (3-12), Lone Tree (3-10), Notre Dame (4-10) and Wapello (8-7).

Wapello, led by all-state guard Maddox Griffin, is a darkhorse in this bracket and is capable of knocking off any team on a given night.

Notre Dame, 59th in the BC Moore rankings, has struggled, but has the potential to pull off a few surprises along the way.

Class 1A District 10

The bracket is loaded, with the winner likely to be favored in the substate final against the District 9 winner.

New London (9-0) is ranked seventh by AP and 14th by BC Moore. The Tigers feature a pair of NCAA Division I hopefuls in juniors Blaise Porter and Kade Benjamin and are tournament tested.

WACO (11-3), is receiving votes in the AP poll and is ranked 19th by BC Moore. The Warriors are a dangerous team, with two wins over Cardinal and a victory against W-MU. They lost close games to New London and Danville.

Other top contenders here include Iowa Valley (11-3), ranked 45th by BC Moore, and Montezuma (11-3), ranked 40th by BC Moore.

The district also includes BGM (4-12), English Valleys (10-6), Keota (7-8), Pekin (6-8), Sigourney (9-7) and Tri-County (0-13).
