Here's how the 2022 Iowa State football season played out game by game

Iowa State enters the 2022 college football season with more unknowns than in most recent seasons.

Gone are program stalwarts such as Brock Purdy, Breece Hall, Charlie Kolar and Mike Rose, but the Cyclones have an interesting mix of returning veterans and exciting young talent.

Iowa State has plenty of exciting games on its schedule from the annual Cy-Hawk rivalry game with Iowa, to perhaps the final home game vs. Oklahoma before the Sooners depart for the SEC.

Here's what to know about each game on the 2022 Iowa State football schedule.

Iowa State 42, Southeast Missouri 10

Hunter Dekkers' debut as the Iowa State starting quarterback went about as well as expected.

The redshirt sophomore tallied 293 passing yards, four touchdowns and one interception to lead Iowa State to a 42-10 win over Southeast Missouri.

The Cyclones scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters and pitched a second-half shutout to pull away in the 2022 season opener.

Iowa State 10, Iowa 7

For the first time since under Matt Campbell, Iowa State emerged victorious in the annual Cy-Hawk game.

The Cyclones forced three turnovers and used a 21-play, 99-yard touchdown drive in the second half to take the lead for good. After allowing an early 16-yard touchdown drive following a blocked punt, Iowa State's defense shut out the Hawkeyes' offense for the final 57 minutes of the game.

Iowa State 43, Ohio 10

Dekkers put together his best performance of the season in the Cyclones' win, throwing for 268 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Jirehl Brock and Deon Silas ran for a combined 134 yards on 17 carries (7.9 yards per touch) while wideout Xavier Hutchinson put together yet another solid performance (nine receptions, 93 yards and a touchdown).

Baylor 31, Iowa State 24

Iowa State struggled to get anything going on the ground vs. Baylor (2.4 yards per rush) and lost the turnover battle 2-0. The Bears struck first and never trailed.

Iowa State fans took issue with a few controversial calls, but the Cyclones find themselves at 3-1 nonetheless. Up next: a tough battle with a Kansas team that has improved dramatically in the second year of coach Lance Leipold.

Kansas 14, Iowa State 11

Iowa State struggled offensively at Kansas and was held to just 11 points. The Cyclones missed three field goals, including a 37-yard attempt with less than a minute remaining that would've likely sent the game to overtime.

After the loss, the Cyclones find themselves at 0-2 in Big 12 play with conference-leader Kansas State up next.

Kansas State 10, Iowa State 9

Iowa State's losing streak stretched to three in a row after a home loss to the Wildcats. The Cyclones' field goal woes from the previous week weren't the culprit this time, as Jace Gilbert made all three of his attempts vs. Kansas State.

Iowa State's offense struggled all game, failing to punch it in the end zone and falling short of the 300-yard mark of total offense. The Cyclones' defense fared well against a dangerous K-State rushing game, which was held to 131 yards on the ground, its lowest total of the season.

Texas 24, Iowa State 21

Iowa State nearly pulled off a big upset vs. Texas, but the Cyclones came up painfully short once again to fall to 0-4 in the Big 12 with all four losses coming by one score.

The Cyclones' offense showed signs of life, however; Iowa State tallied 403 yards of total offense, including 329 through the air from Hunter Dekkers. Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel combined for 16 catches, 248 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas held on after forcing a fumble with about two minutes left in the game to escape with a win.

Oklahoma 27, Iowa State 13

Iowa State dropped its fifth consecutive game to open the Big 12 slate with a two-touchdown loss to Oklahoma.

The Cyclones' offense sputtered once again; Cartevious Norton and Jirehl Brock combined for 22 carries but gained just 49 yards. Hunter Dekkers tossed the ball for 308 yards through the air, but he turned it over three times. Dekkers found some success on the ground in limited carries, but timely mistakes still cost the Cyclones.

Iowa State's chances to make a sixth straight bowl game are becoming slimmer and slimmer each week. It will now take a 3-1 or 4-0 record through the month of November to clinch a bowl.

Iowa State 31, West Virginia 14

The Cyclones finally got on the board in Big 12 play with a win over West Virginia.

Iowa State never trailed, but it took until midway through the fourth quarter for it to finally pull away. Hunter Dekkers had arguably his best game in the Big 12, going 24-for-36 for 219 yards, two passing touchdowns and no interceptions.

Oklahoma State 20, Iowa State 14

In what many fans would say was the most frustrating loss of a frustrating season, Iowa State turned the ball over five times and lost despite an edge in first downs, rushing yards, passing yards and third-down conversions. The Cyclones had chances all day, including on a deep throw late in the fourth quarter that ended in a crucial drop.

Texas Tech 14, Iowa State 10

Iowa State's offensive woes continued vs. Texas Tech.

The Cyclones yet again had a chance to win, leading the Red Raiders in total yardage, 422-246, but struggling in the red zone. Iowa State capitalized on just one of its five trips inside the Texas Tech 20-yard line.

The loss guaranteed a losing season for just the second time in the Matt Campbell era. Now, it's up to the Cyclones to play spoiler against undefeated TCU.

TCU 62, Iowa State 14

Iowa State's season came to an end with a crushing defeat at TCU, landing the Cyclones at 4-8 for the season. TCU and Council Bluffs native Max Duggan piled on 62 points to seal an undefeated regular season for the Horned Frogs.

Iowa State's 4-8 record marks the second time under Matt Campbell that the Cyclones have finished with a losing record, and the first since Campbell's debut season in Ames in 2016.
