RAPID CITY — The 2023 South Dakota State High School wrestling championships concluded Saturday with Canton's boys getting a sweep of Class B titles and Pierre halting Brandon Valley's bid to do the same in Class A.

The final day of the three-day state tourney included Class A and B dual tourneys.

In Class A, top-seeded and defending champion Brandon Valley opened with a 43-30 win over Aberdeen Central, No. 5 Watertown downed No. 4 West Central 53-18, No. 2 Pierre downed No. 7 Rapid City Stevens 46-20 and No. 3 Sturgis edged No. 6 Harrisburg 31-27.

Brandon Valley defeated Watertown 37-36 in a tiebreaker and Pierre handled Sturgis 54-18 in the semifinals. Aberdeen Central turned back West Central 43-24 and Harrisburg beat Stevens 42-18 in the consolation semifinals.

Pierre and Brandon Valley also battled to a draw in the title match, which Pierre won 34-33 on a tiebreaker. The Govs finished 14-1 and Brandon Valley 20-1. Watertown (13-4) beat Sturgis (13-4) 42-33 for third place and Harrisburg (20-7) defeated Aberdeen Central (15-10) 42-24 for fifth place.

In first-round Class B duals, No. 1 Bon Homme-Avon won 39-33 over Kimball-White Lake/Platte-Geddes, No. 5 McCook Central-Montrose beat No. 4 Elk Point-Jefferson 35-27, No. 2 Canton rolled past No. 7 Winner Area 50-24 and No. 3 Custer blasted No. 6 Parker 48-16.

In the semifinals, Bon Homme-Avon won 41-30 over McCook Central-Montrose and Canton won 50-22 over Custer. Canton capped a 30-0 season with a 46-18 win over Bon Homme-Avon (12-1) in the championship. Custer (16-1) finished third with a 57-24 win over McCook Central-Montrose (20-5) and Parker (16-5) won the consolation championship 49-22 over KWLPG (11-6).

Three teams continued their winning streaks and 20 of the 38 individual champions were multiple winners Friday during the conclusion of the individual portion of the tourney.

Brandon Valley's boys, Canton's boys and Pierre's girls each repeated as team champions in the individual tourney, which ran Thursday and Friday

in Class A, Brandon Valley won its third-straight state title with 208.5 points. In Class B, Canton scored 163.5 points to win its sixth-straight title. Pierre won the girls division with 167.

Here's a roundup of each of the three divisions in the individual tourney:

Class A Boys

Junior 285-pounder Navarro Schunke became only the seventh Class A wrestler in history to win a fourth state title, three of the four Oehme brothers also won titles and Alex Menzter repeated as a state champion and earned outstanding wrestlers honors in the division to lead Brandon Valley.

The Lynx won with 208.5 points, followed by Watertown 184.5 and Pierre 182.

Schunke, who is ranked fifth nationally, capped a 28-0 season with an 8-0 win over Watertown sophomore Micah Hach in the championship. He is now 161-2 in his prep career with 126 straight wins.

Junior Trevon Oehme (35-3, 113) and Menzter, a senior (44-0, 138) each repeated as a state champions and senior Traeson Oehme (39-1, 145) captured his second title in three years for the Lynx by beating a returning champion (Moses Gross of Huron) is Class A's featured match of the night. Senior Jordon Oehme (42-1) also won at 132 (downing Watertown senior Braden Le). Youngest brother Brendon Oehme had his bid for a family sweep of titles halted by Watertown's Gage Lohr in a battle of eighth-graders at 106.

Watertown, which shares the all-time state Class A record of 10 state team titles with Rapid City Stevens, pushed the Lynx and notched its best finish since winning the tourney in 2003.

"I think we did pretty well as a team, we had a lot of kids place and some who placed higher than their seeding," said Watertown junior 120-pounder Sloan Johannsen. "Brandon Valley is just a powerhouse right now. Obviously we're not happy with second, we'd like to get first but I think second place was good for us."

Johannsen and Sturgis senior Reese Jacobs each became three-time champions on Friday. Johannsen capped a 48-0 season with an 11-3 win over Stevens' Corbin Zent. He is now 132-1 in his career with 129 straight wins. Jacobs capped his career and a 49-0 season by beating Chance Carda of Pierre 13-8.

Johannsen was subdued after his win, which ended up leading the Arrows past Pierre for second place.

"The third one (state title) isn't my goal, winning a fourth one is," he said of his opportunity he'll have next winter to become only the second Watertown wrestler ever to win four state titles.

Lohr was much more exuberant after winning his title, one in which he avenged a regular-season loss to Brendon Oehme with a 5-2 decision that wasn't official until he scored a takedown with nine seconds remaining.

"I could tell Gage was pretty nervous and I just told him to go out and wrestle his match and that's what he did," said Johannsen. "I've been there before and it was pretty nerve wracking."

Tea Area senior Maddox Slykhuis (50-3, 126) and Mitchell senior Jagger Tyler (42-3, 152) also repeated as champions. Other winners were Pierre senior Deegan Houska (38-7, 160), Tea Area sophomore Sam Werdel (45-5 at 170), Harrisburg senior Jack Detert (35-2, 195) and Chamberlain senior Noah Hutmacher (38-1, 220).

Watertown finished with 11 place winners. Brandon Valley and Pierre each 10. The Lynx led the field with five individual champions.

Class B Boys

Three-time state champion Ayson Rice, a junior who went 48-3 at 145, and two-time champion Tanner Meyers, a senior who went 44-0 at 195, helped Canton continue its dominance in Class B with 163.5 points.

Winner Area rallied to edge the Badlands Brawlers (Philip-Kadoka-Wall) 126.5-126 for second place. Custer was third at 119 and McCook Central-Montrose fifth at 112.5.

Burke-Gregory senior Owen Hansen (43-0 at 132) and Badland Brawlers junior Burke Blasius (26-1, 170) each also became three-time champions. McCook Central-Montrose junior Jackson Remmers capped a 51-0 season and earned his second state title by beating Parkston's Porter Neugebauer in Class B's featured match.

First-time winners included Redfield senior Brady Risetter (36-0, 106), Custer sophomore Tray Weiss (53-3, 113), Wagner junior Karstyn Lhotak (48-3, 120), Miller/Highmore-Harrold sophomore Kellan Hurd (44-5, 126), Badland Brawlers sophomore Jace Blasius (38-3, 138), Winner senior Riley Orel (55-2, 160), Winner Area senior Jack Kruger (33-2, 182), Mobridge-Pollock senior Aiden Schoenhard (37-7, 220) and Canton junior Traun Cook (43-1, 285).

Schoenhard didn't have to wrestle in the finals. He won by injury default over McCook Central-Montrose junior Kade Grocott.

Girls

Seven of the 10 individual champions in the girls division were repeat winners including sophomore Peyton Hellman of Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon (41-1 at 126), Spearfish senior Taylor Graveman (45-0 at 132), Canton senior Carlee Laubach (25-1 at 170) and Pierre senior Ciara McFarling (22-0 at 285). They have all won titles all three years that girls wrestling has been sanctioned in South Dakota.

Graveman, named the outstanding wrestler in the girls tourney, went 89-0 in her career and Laubach 68-1.

McFarling nearly got stuck and overcame an early 5-0 deficit before finally pinning Watertown senior Hope Orr in their championship match.

Spearfish senior Maraia Kruske (34-1, 106), Harrisburg freshman Regina Stoeser (36-2, 120) and Yankton senior Nevaeh Leonard (36-2, 142) each won their second state titles. Stoeser prevailed in the finals against two-time champion Britney Rueb of Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon.

Other champions were Canton junior Sara Schroeder (34-1, 113), Aberdeen Central junior Katrina Gibson (35-8, 154) and Canton senior Zoe Adam (22-1, 190). Gibson became Aberdeen Central's first ever state girls champion.

Pierre had 10 place winners and topped the 52-team field with 167 points. Canton finished second at 134.5. Girls wrestling in South Dakota has grown from 140 to 416 wrestlers in three years.
