BOYS TENNIS: Bemidji takes top seed into Section 8AA Team Tournament

May 16—BEMIDJI — For the first time in 47 years, the Bemidji High School boys tennis team will try to defend a section championship.

The Lumberjacks have put themselves in a good position, as they earned the North subsection's No. 1 seed for the Section 8AA Team Tournament. They open up postseason play on Wednesday, May 18.

BHS will face either fourth-seeded Detroit Lakes or fifth-seeded Moorhead. The Lakers and Spuds will meet in a play-in match on Wednesday afternoon, and Bemidji will play the winner at 5 p.m. Wednesday at BHS.

On the other half of the subsection, second-seeded Alexandria faces third-seeded Sartell-St. Stephen.

If the Jacks win on Wednesday, they'll advance to the section semifinals and face the lowest remaining seed from the South subsection at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20, at Sartell High School. The section title match is then scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday in Sartell.

The South subsection features top-seeded Becker and second-seeded St. Cloud leading the pack. Third-seeded Monticello faces sixth-seeded Sauk Rapids-Rice in a play-in, while fourth-seeded Willmar and fifth-seeded Big Lake clash in the other play-in.

The Section 8AA Individual Tournament will also run next week. Day one will start for Bemidji at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, in Alexandria, while day two is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, at St. Cloud Tech.

The Lumberjacks won the Section 8AA Team Tournament in 2021,

the program's first known section championship since 1973.
