Boys basketball: Vote now for lohud Player of the Week (Nov. 29-Dec. 5)

Boys basketball returned last week to Section 1 and other schools in the Lower Hudson Valley, so we're going to look back at some of the top performers so far.

Please read about this week's finalists and cast your vote in our poll. Voting ends at 2 p.m. Tuesday and the winner will be announced on lohud's social media accounts Tuesday night.

Now, let's meet the candidates.

Frank Bruno, Clarkstown North

Bruno led the Rams to a pair of victories, including an impressive 58-38 win at White Plains in the Harry Jefferson Showcase. Bruno had 13 points and five steals against Gorton, then had a game-high 24 points against White Plains.

Jaeden Carr, Ossining

The senior scored a combined 60 points as Ossining won both games at Sleepy Hollow's Godwin Tournament. He had a game-high 37 points Saturday when Ossining beat Woodlands in the final.

Matteo Cervone, Haldane

The junior had a team-high 18 points in a season-opening win over fellow Class C contender Hamilton, then added 25 more points in Saturday's defeat to Section 9 Class AA Washingtonville.

Sam Gibbs, Stepinac

The senior had a team-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, hit three 3-pointers and had five rebounds, three assists and two steals in Stepinac's season-opening win over St. John's at the National Hoops Festival in Maryland.

Justin Potack, Greeley

Potack earned all-tournament honors at Eastchester and helped the Quakers complete a 2-1 season-opening week. He had a career-high 30 points in a victory over Kennedy Catholic. He also had 18 points against Lincoln and 13 in a loss to Eastchester.

Frankie Provenzale, Eastchester

The junior guard averaged a team-best 12.5 points per game and was named MVP of his team's tournament. He helped fuel the Eagles to impressive season-opening wins over Greeley and Panas, which had entered the final off of two dominant wins.

Carlos Rodriguez, Scarsdale

The sophomore had a strong debut with the Raiders, earning MVP honors at the school's Pizzitola tournament. He scored a combined 30 points in wins over Hastings and Iona Prep B and added five rebounds and seven assists in a 64-38 win over Iona B in the final.

Jaylen Savage, Hamilton

Hamilton started the season 0-2, suffering close losses to Section 1 title contenders Briarcliff and Haldane by a total of five points. Savage, a senior, dropped 34 points and had nine rebounds against Briarcliff, then had 17 points and seven boards against Haldane.

Alex Tavarez, Panas

The junior guard started the season with a flourish for the Panthers. They went 2-1, beating John Jay and Kennedy and then falling to Eastchester in a close game. Tavarez averaged 25 points per contest, including a game-high 31 against John Jay. He was named all-tournament at the Eastchester tournament.
