Boys Basketball: Watertown sweeps, No. 1 De Smet beats No. 2 White River, Hansen sets GPL record

Watertown High School’s boys basketball team got a much-needed sweep over the weekend in non-conference games against Rapid City Central and Stevens.

The Arrows used a big fourth quarter to turn back Central 59-43 on Saturday after downing Stevens 61-51 on Friday night.

Watertown led 31-30 early in the fourth quarter before taking control with a 20-3 surge against the Cobblers (4-6).

Drew Norberg celebrated his birthday with a 24-point, four-steal performance to lead the Arrows. Reese Stark added 10 points and five steals and Cole Holden six points and five rebounds. Kohen Kranz added five points and Mack Johnson and Jake Olson each four.

Watertown shot 37 percent (21 of 57) from the field and snared 25 rebounds.

Rapid City Central received 12 points from Cooper Totter, nine from from Jace Brown and seven points and seven rebounds from Cael Meisman.

The Cobblers made 16 of 37 field-goal attempts and also collected 25 rebounds. Central made 21 turnovers compared to only five for Watertown.

Stark finished with 21 points and Norberg 20 for the Arrows in Friday’s win over Stevens. Johnson added eight points and Devon Lewis and Kranz each five.

Norberg also collected six rebounds for Watertown, which made 26 of 51 field-goal attempts for 51 percent and gained a 29-25 rebounding advantage.

Stevens shot 43 percent (20 of 47) from the field.

Watertown is slated to host Huron at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Civic Arena.

De Smet 63, White River 49 — Damon Wilkinson produced 27 points and 11 rebounds and Kalen Garry 24 and eight to lead No. 1 Class B De Smet (11-1) past No. 2 Class B White River (7-2) in the 40th Hanson Corn Palace Classic.

Tory Holland contributed eight points, nine rebounds and five assists and Rett Osthus six assists and eight rebounds for De Smet.

Joe Sayler scored 30 points and Kendral Cuevas 10 for White River.

Great Plains Lutheran 80, Iroquois-Doland 39 — Sam Hansen recorded a school-record 34 points to pave the way for the Panthers (4-5). Hansen made 13 of 16 field-goal attempts, including 6-of-8 from 3-pointer range, and also went 2-for-2 from the foul line to go along with five rebounds.

Ethan Kjenstad chipped in with 15 points and five steals, Connor Kannas nine points and Gavin Dornbusch seven for GPL. Myles York hauled in 10 rebounds.

Iroquois-Doland slipped to 1-11.

Sioux Valley 63, Tea Area 47 — Fifth-rated Class A Sioux Valley downed fourth-rated Class A Tea Area in the 40th Hanson Corn Palace Classic.

Oliver Vincent had 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds; Alec Squires 12 points and seven rebounds; Patrick Carey 11 points; Damian Danzeisen eight points; and Hayden Ruesink nine rebounds for the Cossacks (9-2).

Jeff Worth had 14 points and Cael Lundin 13 for Tea Area (7-3).

Sisseton 54, Redfield 53 — The Redmen (4-4, 1-2) notched the Northeast Conference win, getting 23 points from Riley BraveBull, 19 points and 13 rebounds from Jason Fisher and 15 points from Ty Langager. Austin Kohl added seven points.

Redfield (3-7, 1-3) was led by Jerron Haider’s 14 points, Mitchell Mack’s 12 points and Justin Ratigan’s 11 rebounds.

Ethan 61, Waubay-Summit 54 — Ethan (7-2) used 20 points and 11 rebounds from Jay Storm, 14 points from Kody Klumb, 13 points from Riley Endres and nine points and nine rebounds from Kaden Klumb to get the win in the 40th Hanson Corn Palace Classic.

Damon Opdahl finished with 27 points and five steals, JT Gulbraa 14 points and 12 rebounds, Jonathan Johnston nine points and Seth Gaikowski six assists for Waubay-Summit (8-3).

West Central 68, Clark-Willow Lake 53 — Wilson Droge had 21 points and Grafton Stroup and Dillon Jackson each 15 to carry West Central (7-3) to victory in the 40th Hanson Corn Palace Classic.

Kaplan Felberg collected 16 points, Tyler O’Neill 12 and Brady Jordan 11 for the Cyclones (3-4). Felberg also had six rebounds, Jordan seven assists and Trey Huber six assists.

Langford Area 52, North Central 26 — Brayden Peterson’s 14-point, 12-rebound performance led the Lions (5-3) to victory. Jesse Keough added 14 points, Ben Gustafson nine and Kassen Keough seven.

Bryce Beitelspacher led North Central (0-10) with 13 points.

Dakota Valley Conference Classic

Castlewood 67, Canistota 52 — Tristan Nielsen poured in 22 points and Lane Tvedt 16 to pace Castlewood (6-5). Jackson Schofield followed with 10, Carson Kirwan eight and Booker Schooley six.

Tage Ortman notched 21 points and Isiah Robertson 11 for Canistota (4-4).

Arlington 69, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Minn. 50 — Caden Letsche collected 24 points, Ryker Erstad 19, Blake Madsen 10 and Britt Carlson nine for Arlington (5-4).

Cole Gilsdorf paced CGB (2-11) with 24 points.

Deubrook Area 45, Pipestone Area, Minn. 40 — Cooper Holmlund scored 12 points and Nick Bowne 10 for the Dolphins (5-5). Andrew Trooien and Sutton Fritz each grabbed seven rebounds and Bowne six. Fritz also dished out six assists.

Merrick Heidbrink had 13 points for Pipestone Area (12-3).

Scotland 48, Estelline-Hendricks 45 — Ashton Dennis scored 16 points to propel Scotland (4-6) to victory.

Dawson Bury scored 20 points, Braxton Saathoff 15 and Joe McAninch 10 for Estelline-Hendricks (6-5), which also got six rebounds from Saathoff and four steals and eight assists from Mattix Hausman.

Dawson-Boyd, Minn. 68, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 48 — Keegon Wicht’s 20 points and Brayson Boike’s 19 points and nine rebounds led Dawson-Boyd (10-4).

Will Matson tallied 17 points, Orion Albertson 16 and Isaac Trygstad 13 for ORR (7-4).

Menno 45, Lake Preston 43 — Kadeyn Ulmer’s 19 points and Blake Rames’ 10 led Menno (3-5). Tyler Massey added 10 rebounds.

The Divers (1-11) received 22 points and seven rebounds from Josh McMasters, 13 and eight from Jake Larsen and six and nine from Riley Casper.

Colman-Egan 52, Ortonville, Minn. 45 — Colman-Egan (1-9) broke into the win column with 17 points from Ben Zwart and 11 from Sawyer Uhing.

Owen Longnecker scored 12 points, Hunter Merritt 11 and Daunte Fetters 10 for Ortonville (1-14). Longnecker also had six rebounds.

Elkton-Lake Benton 63, Hills-Beaver Creek (Minn.) 51 — Aiden Erickson notched 19 points, Ryan Krog 18 points and eight rebounds, Isaac Jaacks six rebounds and Miles Harming five steals and for assists for the Elks (7-3).

Cole Baker finished with 18 points and Ty Bundesen 11 for HBC (5-6).

Mount Vernon-Plankinton 63, Dell Rapids St. Mary 52 — MVP improved to 7-4 and St. Mary slipped to 7-4.

Milbank 47, Florence-Henry 44 — Wylie Mursu scored 16 points and Bennett Schwenn 14 to lift Milbank (4-4) to the non-conference win. Schwenn also added eight rebounds and five assists.

Tegan Sumner finished with 17 points, Ethan Paulson nine, Andrew Schroeder eight and Mehki Keller seven for the Falcons (5-6). Keller also had seven rebounds.

Wilmot 43, Waverly-South Shore 38 — Wilmot (1-6, 1-2) broke into the win column with the Eastern Coteau Conference victory.

Trey Jurgens led the Wolves with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Kasuske added nine points and Dennis Creadon and Parker Steege each six.

The Coyotes were led by Cooper Schmit with 17 points. Landon Maag contributed nine and Dan Dalton six.

Castlewood 83, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 55 — Castlewood (5-5, 2-2) spread the wealth in the Dakota Valley Conference win.

Tristan Nielsen and Lane Tvedt each tallied 12 points and Bryon Laue, Jamison Keszler and Jackson Schofield each 11. Joe Decker added 10 and Carson Kirwan nine.

Will Matson had 21 points, Orion Albertson 13 and Isaac Trygstad 12 for ORR (7-3, 4-3).

Webster Area 68, Aberdeen Roncalli 39 — The Bearcats (2-7, 2-3) cruised to the Northeast Conference win with 30 points and 12 rebounds from Jaydon Keller and 20 and nine from Jacob Pereboom.

Keegan Stewart led Roncalli (3-7, 0-4) with nine points.

Tiospa Zina 55, Hamlin 52 — Juron Adams scored 23 points to lead the Wambdi (5-3, 3-0) to the Northeast Conference win.

Hamlin (4-5, 1-2) received 18 points from Brennan Keszler, 13 from Evan Stormo and 11 from Easton Neuendorf.

Other Games — Tri-State (1-6) broke into the win column with a 63-55 win over Wyndmere-Lidgerwood (N.D.). No other details were reported.

The Clark-Willow Lake at Groton Area (Feb. 5) and Warner at Britton-Hecla games were postponed.
