Boys Basketball Roundup: Eagles prevail 54-50 for the win at Willmar

Mar. 8—WILLMAR — The Willmar boys basketball suffered a 54-50 loss to St. Cloud Apollo on Saturday night at the Big Red Gym.

It was a close game throughout.

Apollo lost is big center, 6-foot-8 junior Thomas Diew, with about three minutes to play and the scored tied. But the Eagles prevailed.

Diew had 13 points and Quamar Gresham added 12 for Apollo (6-8 Central Lakes, 7-9 overall).

For Willmar, Ross Minnick led the way with 14 points. Alex Schramm had 13 points for the Cards and Jacob Rosendahl contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Apollo beat Willmar 50-40 Jan. 22 in St. Cloud.

The Cardinals play Fergus Falls at 7:15 p.m. Monday in Willmar. Willmar is 5-9 in the CLC and 6-9 overall. The Otters are 5-6 and 9-7. Fergus Falls won the first meeting 51-43 on Feb. 19 in Fergus.

Renville County West handed Lac qui Parle Valley its first loss of the season, beating the Eagles in Renville.

RCW led 37-18 at halftime against LQPV (15-1), which is ranked third in the state in Class A.

Tyler Froland led the Jaguars with 22 points and also had seven rebounds. Riley Ashburn added 20 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and six steals for RCW. And, Nathan Schmidt pumped in 14 points for the Jaguars.

For LQPV, Maverick Conn had 29 points and 11 rebounds. He was the only Eagle in double figures.
