Boys Basketball: Balanced attack leads Deuel past Sisseton; Waubay-Summit's upset bid falls short

CLEAR LAKE — Five players scored in double figures to ignite Deuel to an 81-58 Northeast Conference boys basketball victory over Sisseton on Thursday night.

Gavin Benck tallied 18 points, Trey Maaland 15, Braydon Simon 14, Ronnie Begalka 11 and Cooper Schiernbeck 10 for the Cardinals, now 7-4 overall and 5-0 in the NEC. Begalka added seven rebounds and Benck six. Schiernbeck finished with seven assists, Simon five and Maaland four.

Ty Langager led the Redmen (3-4, 0-2) with 21 points and nine rebounds. Riley BraveBull scored 15 points and Jairus Chanku nine.

Aberdeen Christian 57, Waubay-Summit 50 — Fourth-rated Class B Aberdeen Christian closed out the game with a 16-2 run in the final five minutes to record the non-conference victory.

Malek Wieker poured in 25 points for Aberdeen Christian (8-2). Ethan Russell added 14 and Jackson Isakson 10.

Jonathan Johnston finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Damon Opdahl 10 points and four assists for the Mustangs (8-2). JT Gulbraa had 10 points, Seth Gaikowski nine and Jackson Wohlleber seven.

Arlington 63, Lake Preston 33 — Ryker Erstad garnered 21 points and 11 rebounds, Britt Carlson 12 and 11, Blake Madsen 10 and 10 and Caden Letsche nine and 11 for the Cardinals (4-4, 3-2) in the Dakota Valley Conference game.

Tommy Bacon scored eight points and Erstad also dished out five assists for Arlington.

Josh McMasters led the Divers (1-10, 0-6) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Riley Casper added nine points and Jake Larsen six points and nine rebounds.

Sioux Valley 79, Deubrook Area 56 — The fifth-rated Class A Cossacks (8-2) used 23 points and seven assists from Oliver Vincent and 20 points and eight rebounds from Hayden Ruesink to get the win.

Patrick Carey chipped in with 14 points and Alec Squires 12 points and seven rebounds.

Cooper Holmlund and Andrew Trooien each scored 15 points for Deubrook Area (5-5). Parker Crooks followed with nine and Sutton Fritz eight. Nicholas Bowne pulled down six rebounds.

Elkton-Lake Benton 62, Colman-Egan 38 — Aiden Erickson tallied 13 points, Logan Kuehl 11 and Isaac Jacks 10 for the Elks (6-3, 5-1) in the Dakota Valley Conference game. Miles Harming contributed nine rebounds.

Ben Zwart’s 11 points paced Colman-Egan (0-9, 0-5).

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 55, Lac qui Parle Valley 52 — Cody Wichmann drained an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer to give RTR (11-3, 6-1) the Minnesota Camden Conference victory.

Aidan Wichmann finished with 18 points and Drew Werkman 11 for RTR.

Kaiden Allpress had 19 points and Landon Schirm 13 for the Eagles (7-7, 4-3). TJ Mitchell contributed seven rebounds, Schirm four assists and three steals and Allpress three steals.

Other Game — The Redfield at Britton-Hecla game was postponed to Jan. 31.
