LANSING — Just throw it up to him.

You hear that all the time when commentators or coaches are talking about a gifted athlete on the offensive side of the ball.

And, that has been said quite a bit when talking about Boyne City senior Alex Calcaterra.

The 6-foot-3 senior wideout recently put in another season of making plays and was named a Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-State wide receiver in November.

Now, Calcaterra adds Associated Press Division 5-6 All-State honors, picking up second team recognition Wednesday from a panel of state-wide voters.

Calcaterra made 21 catches for 542 yards and 10 touchdowns this season on the offensive side of the ball.

Over the past two years, Calcaterra made 18 touchdown receptions and averaged 27.2 yards a catch on just over 1,100 yards.

Calcaterra also saw more time on the defensive side in 2022, making 46 tackles, six for a loss and one interception.

Without an honorable mention list from the AP this season, Calcaterra was the lone athlete out of Northern Michigan named All-State.

Ogemaw Heights did have lineman Zach Fernelius also earn second team honors, while Kingsford wideout Nic Nora was named to the first team.

Grand Rapids West Catholic running back Tim Kloska earned the AP Division 5-6 Player of the Year honor. Kloska ran for 2,425 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2022, leading West Catholic to a 13-1 record. He is committed to play football at Air Force.

In his career, Kloska ran for just under 6,000 yards with 5,914 and 81 career touchdowns.
