Aug. 7—For the past three decades, the South Skunk Blues Society has commemorated the rich history of blues music and entertained locals by booking amazing live performers at the iconic Maytag Bowl. The organization is welcoming audiences to celebrate its 30th year during Bowlful of Blues on Sept. 4.

Performing Bowlful of Blues this year is Carolyn Wonderland from 8 to 10 p.m.; Kent Burnside from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; Ghost Town Blues Band from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; Muddy Walter band from 2 to 3:30 p.m.; and The Matt Woods Band from noon to 1:30 p.m. All performances will be at the bowl of Maytag Park, 301 S. 11th Ave. W., in Newton.

Dan Nieland, a volunteer helping out the South Skunk Blues Society, told city council members on Aug. 3 that even though he is more of a fan of country music, he is looking forward to blues concert. As a transplant of Newton, one of the things he is looking forward to is being closer to Bowlful of Blues.

"To that end, if you are a fan of blues you will notice any of the people on that list have and could put a heck of a show by themselves," Nieland said of the lineup. "So put together it's going to be amazing. That said it's going to be a little bit more expensive. Because everything up has gone up as well."

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 cash only at the gate. Children under 12 years of age enter free. Coolers are welcome, but glass is prohibited.

To purchase tickets now visit www.southskunkblues.org or www.midwestix.com. Advance ticket vendors can be found at Zzz records in Des Moines and Haverhill Social Club in Haverhill, as well as Mattingly Music, Nostalgia Wine & Spirits and Hy-Vee in Newton.

In between sets, audiences will be entertained by Rob Lumbard, Bob Door/Jeff Petersen, Buckmiller/Schwager Band and The Jury.

Nieland told council members that he and South Skunk Blues Society President Mike Cooling will be at their next meeting on Aug. 15 to discuss a request for $3,000 to go towards Bowlful of Blues.
