Boulder County SWAT team arrests wanted man in Gunbarrel

Aug. 8—A Boulder County SWAT team arrested a 34-year-old man who was wanted for a felony bail bond condition violation and protection order violations on Saturday in Gunbarrel.

Boulder County officials received word that Benjamin Saffell was in a camping trailer parked near the intersection of Kalua Road and Galley Court in unincorporated Boulder County.

Because of Saffell's violent criminal history, officials deployed the Boulder County SWAT Team, which includes deputies and officers from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office and the police departments in Erie, Lafayette and Louisville.

The officers were able to arrest Saffell without injury.

According to online court records, Saffell in February 2012 pleaded guilty to lesser charges of second-degree assault, first-degree burglary-assault/menace, felony criminal mischief in and Adams County court. Records show a mandatory protection order related to this case was issued Aug. 1.

Shortly after the arrest, the camper Saffell had been in caught fire. Boulder Rural Fire crews put it out. Its cause is unknown.

Saffell remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail. His booking photo was not available.
