Boulder County gears up for Bike to Work Day return next week

Sep. 17—After taking a year off because of the pandemic, Bike to Work Day returns on Wednesday.

Boulder, Longmont and other communities are participating in the event, which celebrates commuters who choose to travel on bikes. In addition to being canceled last year, this year's event was moved from June to September as a pandemic precaution.

There are breakfast stations serving free food and drink in Boulder and beyond for those participating, including:

* Full Cycle, 2355 30th St.

* Community Cycles north parking lot: 2601 Spruce St., Unit B

* Boulder Community Health's Foothills Hospital, 4747 Arapahoe Ave.

* University of Colorado Boulder, 1835 Pleasant St.

Boulder's breakfast stations are open from 6:30 to 9 a.m.

Likewise, Longmont is hosting a Bike to Work Day breakfast station at the Civic Center Plaza, 350 Kimbark St., and the Service Center, 1100 S. Sherman St., between 7 and 9 a.m.

According to a Boulder news release, Bike to Work Day supports the city's transportation goals by encouraging safe travel as part of its Vision Zero effort, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.

Community Cycles, a local nonprofit that works to improve bicycling through education and advocacy, is helping to coordinate the event in Boulder. On Wednesday, the organization is hosting guided bike rides.

The South Side Walnut Cafe hasn't hosted a station in a number of years due to the prevalence of stations in the Table Mesa shopping center but decided to do so this year.

"But this year, with fewer stations, we thought it was really important to the community to step up, especially for our friends and neighbors in south Boulder," owner Dana Derichsweiler stated the news release.

The release notes that there are fewer stations because local businesses are dealing with staffing shortages and uncertain budgets.

There also are breakfast stations in Louisville, Lafayette, Broomfield and other area communities. Find a map of stations at biketoworkday.co/map.

Those participating are asked to sign up at biketoworkday.co/#pledgeToRide so each community can track its impact.
