Boris Johnson made a big announcement to his Twitter followers today as he revealed he had joined the messaging app Snapchat.

However, his news was overshadowed as the avatar on the app that had been created to look like the politician bore more than a passing resemblance to US chat show host Ellen Degeneres according to some.

"Hi folks, I’m now on Snapchat so you can see more about what I’m doing as your Prime Minister," a message to his Twitter account read as Johnson encouraged followers to add him.

Other users of the micro-blogging site were quick to point out that the blonde-haired and blue-eyed character could well be mistaken for comedian and actor Degeneres.

"Why do you have a picture of Ellen DeGeneres as your avatar?" one asked as many others chimed in to share similar sentiments.

The Prime Minister's announcement came just an hour before he gave the keynote speech at the Conservative Party Conference which is currently being held in Manchester.

The official Twitter page for the Conservatives also promoted Johnson's new account with a video promising followers they could "get exclusive content and go behind-the-scenes like never before”.

Johnson used his first few Snapchat posts to reiterate his priorities such as "get Brexit done", "20,000 more police" and "better hospitals".

Yesterday saw Johnson hit the headlines after one of his aides, Shelley Williams-Walker, was videoed snatching a cup of coffee out of his hands as she uttered: "No disposable cups."

Later on, a photo of Johnson cheerily holding a mug was posted to his Twitter account along with the caption: "I got my coffee in the end."
