First poll since Boris Johnson was confirmed as next PM shows he is twice as popular as Corbyn

Boris Johnson is almost double as popular as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to a YouGov poll.

The survey revealed that almost four in ten Brits think the former mayor of London will make a better Prime Minister than Mr Corbyn.

This comes as Theresa May has been to Buckingham Palace today to officially resign as Prime Minister leaving Mr Johnson to take over.

YouGov asked the question “Which of the following do you think would made the best Prime Minister?”

In response, 38% of people said it would be Mr Johnson compared to 20% for Mr Corbyn.

Another 38% of Brits said they could not choose between Mr Corbyn and Mr Johnson.

YouGov asked the question to 1,715 adults from Great Britain from July 23-24.

Mr Corbyn has said that Mr Johnson’s priorities are “tax write-off for richest” as well as a no-deal Brexit.

He said he was ready for a general election “at any time”.

After Mr Johnson’s victory was announced, Mr Corbyn tweeted: "Boris Johnson has won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members by promising tax cuts for the richest, presenting himself as the bankers' friend, and pushing for a damaging no deal Brexit.

“But he hasn't won the support of our country."

When Mrs May left Downing Street today, she said serving as Prime Minister has been the “greatest honour”.

In his victory speech, Mr Johnson vowed to “deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn”.

After beating Jeremy Hunt, he said: "We are going to energise the country.

"We are going to get Brexit done on 31 October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.

"We are once again going to believe in ourselves, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy ropes of self doubt and negativity."
