ARA presents ‘A Look at the History of New Hampshire’s Poor Houses’
DURHAM — The Active Retirement Association announces a free Zoom presentation on Feb. 6, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. featuring Stephen Taylor, who will speak about New Hampshire’s historical treatment of its poorest citizens. He will discuss how vague laws and compulsory taxes in colonial times led to the creation of alms houses and poor farms in many New Hampshire towns where the poor were subjected to horrid conditions. Monthly crafting group with braided rug demo
DOVER — On Monday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. meet up with other local crafters at the Dover Public Library. Bring a current project and learn about what other people are making. February's meeting will feature a demonstration of rug braiding with details about what supplies and tools are needed. There will be a follow-up class scheduled for those who are interested enough to purchase the necessary items.
AARP tax prep at Gafney Library
WAKEFIELD – Need help with your IRS tax preparation this year? The Gafney Library in Sanbornville is again offering assistance through the AARP tax preparation program on Tuesdays in the new community room beginning Feb. 7 and ending on April 4.
AARP IRS trained tax volunteer Andy Mako will offer free tax preparation help to anyone in N.H., but if you’re 50 and older, and can’t afford a tax preparation service, this program was made especially for you. Appointments are available on Tuesdays beginning Feb. 7 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call the Gafney at 603-522-3401 to schedule yours now.
Author Talk With Gregory Bastianelli
BERWICK, Maine — Gregory Bastianelli is the author of the novels “Shadow Flicker,” “Snowball,” “Loonies,” and “Jokers Club.” His novella “The Lair of the Mole People” appeared in the pulp anthology “Men & Women of Mystery Vol. II.” Bastianelli will be visiting the Berwick Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m.
Perspectives NH Humanities Book Discussion
DOVER — Explore Black History Month with a challenging and unsettling account of Reconstruction-era racial history. On Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Dover Public Library will host a Perspectives Book Discussion of Henry Louis Gates, Jr’s book “Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow.” Participants may attend in-person or sign up at the library’s website to attend virtually. Quilted pin class
DOVER — On Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Dover Public Library learn how to make a hand-quilted hexie pin. You can create any design you like and learn some basic quilting skills at the same time. No quilting, sewing, or embroidery experience needed. All supplies will be provided.

Kathy Fink and Her Cabaret Singers
DOVER — On Saturday, Feb.11 at 2 p.m. join Kathy Fink and her cabaret singers at the Dover Public Library for an afternoon of love songs from the sublime to the ridiculous. Songs include such standards as "Some Enchanted Evening" and "A Cockeyed Optimist" as well as more modern selections including "Taylor the Latte Boy" and "Winner Takes it All.”
Hand Quilting Class
DOVER — On Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Dover Public Library. Have you ever wanted to learn how to quilt but felt intimidated? This is the class for you. In this class you'll learn the basics of English Paper Piecing, a hand quilting technique that requires nothing more than fabric, paper, and thread. All supplies will be provided and no experience whatsoever is needed. Beginners are encouraged to attend. You'll leave class with a completed pin cushion and all the knowledge you need to start a larger quilting project if you enjoyed yourself. Sign up is needed.
