Body of missing canoer found on Buffalo National River after three-day search

After a three-day search, first-responders found the body of a canoer reported missing on the Buffalo National River.

Brian Hanson, 56, of Rockford, Illinois was reported missing Monday after his canoe capsized at Clabber Creek Shoals, downriver from the Rush access, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

Multiple agencies were involving in trying to locate the man including several sheriff's offices and fire departments plus the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State Police, Mennonite Disaster Service and Christian Aid Ministries.

The body was found late Wednesday in the Buffalo National River near the confluence with the White River.

The release said Buffalo National River staff responded to two other serious incidents the same day Hanson was found.

At 2 p.m., a man near Kyles Landing river access had a seizure and was transported by helicopter to a local hospital.

Simultaneously, a vehicle was found 4.5 miles away — just north of Jasper, Arkansas — with a driver slumped over the wheel. Brandian Lee Smith, 44, of Jasper, died from an apparent medical issue.
