A murder suspect has been bailed after the body of an elderly man was discovered inside a freezer at a recycling plant.

Police said the 50-year-old man had been released pending further inquiries into the discovery in Exhall, near Coventry, on Friday.

The suspect, who is believed to be known to the victim, was detained on suspicion of murder in the Derby area on Tuesday, police said.

Police were called to Colliery Lane on Friday, after the victim's corpse was found stuffed inside a container as it was being transported from Birmingham to Warwickshire.

West Midlands Police said the freezer had been moved during a flat clearance at a housing association in Birmingham.

A force spokesperson said on Tuesday: "We’ve launched a murder investigation after a body was found at a recycling unit in Warwickshire on Friday 21 August.

"We were made aware that a freezer - transported to a waste management centre in Colliery Lane, Exhall - had been opened and the body of an elderly man had been discovered.

"The freezer had been moved from a flat clearance by a housing association in Birmingham.”

The police spokesperson added: "A post-mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow (Wed) which will help identify the man.

"Today (Tues) a 50-year-old man, who is believed to have been known to the victim, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into police custody in Derby.
