Body found in Passaic River near Willowbrook Mall, authorities say

WAYNE — A body was recovered on Friday from the Passaic River where it bends around residential properties on Riverlawn Drive, authorities said.

Police headquarters received a 911 call at 6:46 p.m. to report that someone was drowning in the river, said Chief John McNiff. Officers, along with volunteer EMTs and firefighters, were dispatched for a rescue, but it turned into a recovery.

The recovery effort lasted for more than two hours, involving local and county law enforcement.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office was notified, McNiff said, adding that he could not provide further information about the investigation or the victim's identity.

Riverlawn Drive is a flood-prone street at the far south end of the township, near Willowbrook Mall and other retail complexes. Little Falls Road in Fairfield is on the other side of the waterway.
