Bob Krist has been photographing the world for decades

Bob Krist has been a travel photographer since 1976. He captures cultures all over the world for magazines like National Geographic and the Smithsonian. Bob’s goal is to enrich American audiences with the stories of people far and wide.

“You just see a lot of different and very unique cultures,” Bob told In The Know. “The thing that strikes me about this, is that on one level we’re all the same.”

Travel taught Bob that most humans want the same thing: a secure life for themselves and their family.

“But overlayed in that is these amazing cultures and languages. The variety, the richness of the human tapestry,” he said.

The New Jersey-born photographer always wanted to travel. Despite being given an opportunity by National Geographic early on in his career, his editor told him his photos weren’t interesting enough. But when he began to capture the vibrancy and diversity of human life on his own terms, things turned around.

Bob and his wife Peggy Krist have been married for 43 years. After she left her corporate job to raise their children, she became his assistant. While Bob says other travel photographers find it difficult to maintain a lasting marriage, Peggy credits the distance as their saving grace.

“We have been married 43 years but we haven’t spent 43 years together,” Peggy told In The Know. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Great light, strong composition and a sense of moment are the three factors that make a great photo, according to Bob.

“Why are you slicing off this 125th of a second and not the one before or after?” Bob asked.

The seasoned pro wants to continue traveling and documenting humanity — even if magazine editors are no longer interested in his work.

“I don’t have a plan to retire,” Bob said. “I think retirement for me is just gonna be slowing down.”
