During Tuesday night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blues defenceman Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench during a television timeout and required immediate emergency assistance due to a cardiac episode.

The Blues provided an update on Bouwmeester’s condition in a press conference Wednesday, and shared that the 36-year-old is doing very well while still undergoing a battery of tests at UC Irvine Medical Center.

Further information was provided regarding the terrifying incident on the Blues’ bench last evening, including that a defibrillator was needed to revive Bouwmeester at the arena. Bouwmeester regained consciousness immediately and was transported directly to the hospital where he remains.

The Blues’ organization was extremely grateful and emotional while thanking the home team for their quick response and efforts in their lifesaving efforts regarding Bouwmeester’s health. Players were able to see, and communicate with Bouwmeester last evening in person and through FaceTime, saying he was in good spirits from the hospital.

The game was tied 1-1 with 7:50 left in the first period and will be rescheduled for a later date. The Blues will play their regularly scheduled game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
