Blue Jays: Tennis splits in Grand Forks, softball wins

May 15—Jamestown High School girls tennis split Friday night at Riverside Courts in Grand Forks.

The Blue Jays defeated Grand Forks Central 3-2 and were nipped 3-2 by Grand Forks Red River. Jamestown is scheduled to play at an invitational in West Fargo on Saturday (May 15).

"I'm incredibly proud of how the girls played today," said Blue Jays' coach Paul Olson. "We competed up and down the lineup against two teams that are in the running for state tournament berths in the EDC."

Phoebe Olson went 2-0 on the day, sweeping past Central's Madi Stauss (6-4, 6-1) and the Roughriders' Maddy Sandberg (6-3, 6-0). Cora Wolsky and Bria Niewswaag also notched singles victories for the Blue Jays.

The doubles team of Wolsky and Mya Henderson made the difference in the win over the Knights, rolling 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 over Sydnee Lemieux and Jennifer Wang.

"Cora picked up two wins, including a convincing singles win," said coach Olson. "Phoebe was close to being back to form after a tough week at No. 1 singles."

Jamestown's doubles team of Lauryn Hibl and Olivia Schriock narrowly fell, 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-5 in the loss to Red River.

Olson said: "Lauryn and Olivia played well against two tough teams."

Softball clubs three homers

A pair of first-inning big flies sparked Blue Jay softball to a 14-4 non-conference win Friday at West Fargo Sheyenne.

The Blue Jays' Katie Falk uncorked a three-run homer in an eight-run Jamestown first inning, prior to Marin Rasmussen emptying the bases in the frame with a grand slam to left field. Alyssa Gange went yard with a solo shot in the top of the fourth — part of a 4-for-4 game —giving the Blue Jays three home runs in its 14-hit attack.

Payton Gall collected the win for the Jays in the circle. Just one of the Mustangs' four runs were earned, while Gall gave up six hits and struck out five batters.

Jamestown improved to 15-5 overall and hosts Minot (14-8) at Trapper Field tomorrow (May 15) beginning at 1 p.m.
