Blue Jays Roundup: Tennis team picture perfect on Saturday

May 22—The five seniors on the Jamestown High School tennis team couldn't have said goodbye to their final, regular-season schedule any better than they did Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Paul Olson's squad worked together to pull off a 5-0 defeat of West Fargo in the team's final match of the regular season. Jamestown is set to play Mandan on Monday in a WDA tournament play-in match. First serves are set for 4:30 p.m. at the Braves' home venue.

Phoebe Olson put together a stellar performance in her ninth win of the season at the No. 1 singles spot — defeating West Fargo's Reet Goyal 6-1, 6-0. Mya Henderson pitched a convincing defeat of Zoe Elhard, topping her 6-1, 6-4 at the two-hole while Bria Nieswaag held on to nab a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3.

Grace LeFevre and Isabel LeFevre delivered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of the No. 1 West Fargo duo while Edie Hegerle and Hana Lang got the last win of the day topping Kaitlyn Carlson and Anna Montplaisir in three sets. Hegerle and Lang won it 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

We played our best match of the season today, and that's great for the seniors' last home match," Coach Olson said. "Mya and Bria made good in-match adjustments to get their wins.

"Grace and Isabel worked together really well at No. 1 doubles and two of our younger players — Edie Hegerle and Hana Lang stepped into 2 doubles on short notice to win there. I'm proud of how they put it all together today."

Four games in a 24-hour period can take a toll but the Jays wound up 50-50 on the weekend.

In the team's non-conference doubleheader against Fargo Davies on Saturday, the Jays fell 10-2 in game No. 1 but came out guns ablazin in the second game and topped the Eagles 18-14.

Jamestown wound up splitting with Minot 6-5, 6-4 in the team's last WDA game of the season on Friday. The Jays are slated to head to the West Regional tournament on Thursday.

The Jays struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Davies giving up ten runs. The Eagles scored on a walk by Easton Ebeling in the first inning and a sac fly by Matthew Nelson in the second inning.

The home team evened things up at one in the bottom of the first inning when Connor Hoyt scored one run on a stolen base but Davies pulled away for good with one run in the second inning.

The visitors didn't let up, scoring six runs in the third. In total, Davies had 12 hits on the books.

Chayse Keller was on the mound for the Eagles, he lasted seven innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out seven and walking one.

Kasen Rowell was in the circle for the Jays, allowing seven hits and eight runs over his three innings tossed. Tyson Jorissen threw four innings in relief. Gage Orr led Jamestown with one hit in three at-bats. Jamestown only tallied one hit in game No. 1.

Whatever happened in the 20 minutes between games was the turning point the Jays needed.

In the second game, the Blue Jays posted 12 hits while Davies was credited with just three hits. Preston Gall put together an impressive run in the circle, allowing just one hit across his 1.1 innings pitched. Gall did not allow any runs to cross the plate and retired a pair of batters.
