Blue Jays Roundup: Girls basketball takes it to Dickinson

Jan. 29—Jamestown High School head girls basketball coach Andy Skunberg and his crew were coming off a 13-day break from the boards but the squad showed no signs of rust Friday evening in Dickinson.

"Coming back from almost two weeks off is always nerve-wracking," Skunberg said. "It was a long break but we used our practice time to get stronger as a team and I think that showed tonight."

The Jays easily topped the Midgets 86-65 to move to 7-4 overall and 6-4 in the WDA. Jamestown holds a 2-0 record against the Midgets this season having previously defeated Dickinson 107-64 earlier this month.

The Blue Jays are slated to wrap up their weekend with a conference game against Bismarck St. Mary's (3-8 overall, 2-8 WDA) on Saturday. First tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Annie Nabwe was on fire for the Jays, tossing in nine buckets from inside the circle. The senior went 40% from the free-throw line, to end up with 20 total points.

The Jays had four other team members crack into double digits with Katie Falk and Ella Falk combining for 31 total points and Hunter Petersen going 5-for-9 inside and 3-for-4 from the stripe.

Rylee Joseph was a perfect 4-4 at the line while also drilling a pair from outside.

Ella Falk was the Jays' assist leader dishing out eight to her teammates while Nabwe nabbed 11 defensive rebounds, made three blocks and forced four turnovers.

From a record standpoint, Jamestown is currently ranked fourth in the West Region behind Bismarck Century, Minot and Bismarck High.

"The girls were determined," Skunberg said. They played well. We have some things we will continue to build upon in practice this

next week but overall I am proud of the effort they gave on the court this evening."

Mandan wasn't ready for what Larry Eslick and the Jamestown High School wrestling team brought to the table Friday night.

The Blue Jays kept the Braves scoreless until the very last match of the night when Mandan's Seth Gerhardt took down Malakai Robinson with 4:19 off the clock. Jamestown topped Mandan 67-6, winning 13 of the 14 weight classes.

Jamestown is 2-0 on the week, having defeated Bismarck Century 32-29 on Tuesday. Eslick's crew now stands at 8-6 overall and 5-4 in conference matches.

Eslick and his group will wrap up their week with a team tournament at Aberdeen Central on Saturday.

Jack Schauer got things started for the Jays Friday, tripping up Kellen Beneke with 3:43 off the clock. Schauer's pin was one of eight produced by the Blue Jays. Seven of the Jays' wins by fall came at 138-pounds or heavier.

Things were all tied up after two periods Friday night at Wilson Arena but an unlucky bounce of the puck with 1:32 gone in the third sent Fargo North back home as the victors.

The Blue Jay boys hockey squad fell 3-2 to the Spartans in the non-conference contest, dropping the Jays record down to 11-2 in the regular-season standings and 12-4 overall.

A three-point contest against Hazen on Saturday still gives Blue Jay head coach Matt Stockert and his crew a shot at beating out Minot for the West Region regular-season title.

After a scoreless first period, Nolan Nenow broke the ice with a shot off an assist from Conner McLachlan with 3:22 gone in the second.

Peter Dorsher got the Spartans on the board five minutes later off a pair of passes from Nathaniel Fritel and Owen Branson.

Senior Blue Jay captain Hunter Nelson gave his team the lead with 12:52 gone in the second but Fargo North's Max Watson knotted things up again with 1:02 left in frame No. 2.

Brendan Richards netted the winning goal for the Spartans 90 seconds into the third. Blue Jay goaltender Brode Hillstrom made 17 saves against the Spartans' sticks.

Minot swept by the Blue Jay girls hockey team for the second time this season Friday night.

The Jays fell 4-1 to the Majettes to drop down to 5-9 in conference play and 6-9 overall.

The club will have a chance to break its five-game losing streak with a conference tilt against Williston on Saturday. The puck is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m.

The Jamestown High School boys swimming and diving team started out their meet against Fargo Davies on a high note Friday evening.

Caleb Fabian, Bodi Haglund, Alex Goodrie and Teddy Solensky humbled the other 200-yard medley relay teams, racing their way to a first-place, 1 minute, 48.99 second finish.

Unfortunately for the Jays, it would be only one of four first-place finishes.

The Eagles wound up topping the Jays 107-76. Head coach Ben Smith and his squad will have to hit the reset button quickly as they are slated for another dual against a hungry West Fargo Sheyenne squad on Saturday.
