This is certainly not the kind of “first day of spring training” story that the Toronto Blue Jays hoped would be coming out as pitchers and catchers report to Dunedin, Florida in advance of the 2020 season.

Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire was arrested last weekend for the exposure of sexual organs and given a notice to appear in court, according to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, reports Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.

In a statement, the Blue Jays acknowledged their awareness of the situation.

“The Toronto Blue Jays are aware of the recent police incident involving catcher Reese McGuire. He has been in communication with the Blue Jays and we are working to gather more information. Out of respect for the legal process, neither he nor the club will comment any further at this time.”

According to reports, McGuire was inside an SUV in a parking lot in Dunedin on Friday afternoon at the time of the incident.

McGuire enters spring as the presumptive favourite to be half of the team’s catching tandem with Danny Jansen. McGuire, who turns 25 on March 2, appeared in 30 games with the Blue Jays last season, posting a .299/.346/.526 batting line.

He is due to appear at the Criminal Court Complex in Clearwater on March 16.
