Bloomington South, Columbus North to collide in tennis regional final

It's on. The ninth-ranked Bloomington South and fourth-ranked Columbus North boys' tennis teams will get their rematch in the finals of the South Regional on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The host Panthers had no problems beating Seymour, 4-1, while the Bull Dogs had even fewer dispatching upstart Southwestern (Hanover) in Tuesday's semifinals. The winner advances to the Jasper Semistate to take on either Castle or Evansville Memorial.

It was all South (13-3) in the singles department as Michael Asplund won 6-0, 6-2, Chris Lian rolled 6-0, 6-0 and Alex Busch cruised 6-0, 6-1 and at No. 2 doubles, the team of Josh Sang and David Ciucu got off the court quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

The Owls' only win came at No. 1 doubles, where Joseph Schmidt and Jack Dielingen knocked off Luka Jovanovic and Nicky Walker, 6-2, 7-5, to keep their season alive in the individual tourney.

Columbus North lost just six games in its sweep of the first-time sectional champs. The Bull Dogs won the regular season meeting with South, 3-2.

Cougar singles, doubles

Bloomington North's Nick Shirley flew by Austin Brendan Hanner, 6-0, 6-0 to open play in the singles tourney, while Jennings County's Owen Law beat Greensburg's Bryce Stringer by the same score.

In doubles play, Scottsburg's top team got by Brownstown Central, 6-3, 7-6 and Greensburg's duo beat their foes from Hauser, 6-1, 6-1.

Both Shirley and North's doubles team of Casey McIntyre and Brady Murphy will be action on Wednesday.
