BLACKPINK to make U.S. award show debut at 2022 Video Music Awards

K-pop icons BLACKPINK are slated to make their U.S. awards show debut at the 2022 Video Music Awards on Aug. 28.

The girl group quartet will perform their new comeback song “Pink Venom,” which will be officially released on Aug. 19. The track appears on their forthcoming album “Born Pink,” which is scheduled to be released on Sept. 16.

YG Entertainment has said the album represents the group’s confidence and dignity, with the song matching BLACKPINK’s “unique identity” and “fatal aura.” The music video is also said to be their most expensive production to date. Not much else is known about the album except for the possible involvement of OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder.

BLACKPINK is nominated for a VMA this year for Best Metaverse Performance for “BLACKPINK: The Virtual,” their virtual concert and collaboration with “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile,” where they debuted the music video for “Ready For Love.”

Group member Lisa is also nominated in the Best K-Pop category for her solo song “Lalisa.” She is the first Korean soloist and solo female K-pop artist to be nominated for a VMA. In 2020, BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to win a VMA for “How You Like That” as song of the summer.

BLACKPINK’s VMA debut comes after their comeback announcement in July, which YG Entertainment called “a continuous large-scale project which will extend through the second half of the year.” Their label also said their world tour would be “the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group.” The four members will begin their tour in Seoul in October and head to over 20 cities in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
